If your computer shows the wrong local time, first check its selected time zone: it may be set to the wrong region, unable to detect your location, or using outdated regional time rules. The time zone and the clock itself are separate settings, so automatic clock syncing alone may not correct the local time. You can select a time zone manually on Windows, macOS, and Ubuntu.
Is the time zone wrong, or is the clock wrong?
Compare the displayed time with the correct local time and check the region selected in Date & Time settings. If the region is wrong, change the time zone. If the region is right but the clock’s minutes or underlying time are inaccurate, check automatic date and time synchronization instead. Windows provides separate controls for these settings, and Apple likewise treats network time and location-based time-zone selection separately. Why a computer can show the wrong time zone
The selected region is incorrect
If the computer is set to a time zone that does not match your location, the displayed local time will be offset. Select the correct region in the operating system’s Date & Time settings.
Automatic location detection cannot determine where you are
Automatic time-zone selection relies on location information and, on the platforms covered here, may also require internet access. Location Services may be off, the computer may be offline, or privacy settings may block access. Ubuntu documents internet access and location services as requirements for automatic updates; Apple directs Mac users to check Location Services and the related System Services settings. A restriction or administrator policy controls the setting
A time-zone control that is grayed out or keeps reverting may be managed by parental controls, device restrictions, or a work or school administrator. Microsoft documents policy and location configuration as factors in whether automatic time-zone settings are available; Apple notes that device restrictions can disable automatic settings. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to review the policy rather than trying to bypass it. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance describes administrator-level controls.
The operating system has outdated time-zone rules
Governments can change UTC offsets or daylight-saving-time policy. A computer may have the correct region selected but still apply old rules if its time-zone data is out of date. Microsoft recommends installing time-zone updates so Windows and applications use accurate rules, and says computers should receive these updates even when they are not in a region that is changing. Fix the time zone on Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time.
- For automatic detection, turn on Set time zone automatically. If you want to choose a region yourself, turn that option off and select the correct time zone from the menu.
- If the clock itself is also wrong, check Set time automatically separately.
Microsoft says daylight-saving adjustment follows automatically when automatic time-zone selection is enabled. With manual time-zone selection, the daylight-saving option can be configured separately. If automatic selection is missing or unavailable, check location permissions and whether a work or school policy manages the setting. Microsoft’s detailed troubleshooting steps are administrator-oriented; do not edit registry values to work around a managed setting.
Fix the time zone on macOS
- Open System Settings > General > Date & Time.
- Enable automatic date and time, then enable Set time zone automatically using your current location.
- If automatic selection still fails, check that the Mac has internet access, Location Services is on, and the time-zone-related System Services settings are enabled.
- Restart the Mac if the setting still does not update. You can set the time zone manually as a fallback.

Fix the time zone on Ubuntu desktop
- Open Settings > System > Date & Time.
- For automatic updates, make sure the computer is connected to the internet and location services are available.
- To choose a region manually, turn off automatic time zone and search for your current city.

What to check if the problem continues
- Confirm which setting is wrong. Check the selected region first; if it is correct but the clock is inaccurate, inspect automatic date and time synchronization separately.
- Set the time zone manually as a diagnostic. If manual selection fixes the display, the issue is likely with automatic detection rather than the clock itself.
- Restore the requirements for automatic detection. Check internet connectivity and allow the operating system’s relevant location services.
- Check for restrictions. If a setting is unavailable or changes back, ask the parent, organization, or device administrator who manages the computer to review its controls.
- Install operating-system updates. This can bring regional time-zone rules up to date when governments change their policies.
- Recheck clock synchronization. If the region is correct but the displayed time remains inaccurate, troubleshoot automatic date and time rather than changing the time zone again.
Should you use automatic or manual time-zone selection?
