If your site is missing from ChatGPT Search, first check whether OpenAI’s search crawler can access it. Allowing OAI-SearchBot makes your public pages eligible to be discovered and included in summaries and snippets, but it does not guarantee a high position or a citation. OpenAI says placement depends on multiple factors and is not guaranteed.
Can your website appear in ChatGPT Search?
OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search. The key distinction is eligibility versus visibility: crawler access gives a page a chance to be discovered, while its placement and whether it is cited are not assured. OpenAI describes its results as ranked using multiple factors intended to help users find relevant, reliable information, without publishing a complete ranking formula.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search guidance cautions that placement is not guaranteed. That means no robots.txt change, schema format, page length, or writing style should be treated as a promise of ranking or citation.
How to troubleshoot a page that does not appear
1. Check whether robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot
Open your site’s robots.txt file and look for rules that block OAI-SearchBot, including broad rules that apply to all crawlers. OpenAI recommends not blocking this crawler if you want site content to be eligible for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. Its publisher FAQ states: “For your site content to be included in summaries and snippets in ChatGPT, make sure you aren’t blocking OAI-SearchBot.”

2. Check the full access path
A permissive robots.txt rule is only one part of access. OpenAI’s crawler documentation publishes IP ranges for OAI-SearchBot and recommends allowing requests from them. Check whether your hosting provider, CDN, firewall, or bot-mitigation service blocks those requests. A page can be publicly viewable in a browser yet still be inaccessible to a crawler because of controls elsewhere in the request path.
3. Allow time for a robots.txt change to take effect
OpenAI says a robots.txt change may take about 24 hours to adjust in its search systems. This is an operational estimate, not a guarantee that a page will then appear or receive a particular position.

4. Keep the crawler controls separate
OpenAI’s crawler settings serve different purposes. Choose the rule based on the outcome you want:
| Crawler | Purpose described by OpenAI | What its rule controls |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot |
Search discovery | Whether content can be discovered and included in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets |
GPTBot |
Content that may be used to train generative AI models | Training-related crawling, independently of the search crawler setting |
ChatGPT-User |
Some user-triggered visits | Does not control automatic inclusion in ChatGPT Search |
OpenAI says controls for OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are independent. Blocking GPTBot does not, by itself, block OAI-SearchBot; allowing GPTBot is not required for search discovery. See OpenAI’s crawler documentation for the stated purposes and controls.

5. Check the page and citation, not just the search result
If ChatGPT cites a page—or does not surface one you expect—inspect the page itself, including its publication or update date and the specific claim at issue. OpenAI warns that Search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. A citation is a useful pointer to a source, not proof that its claims are accurate.
How to measure traffic from ChatGPT
After crawler access is available, use your analytics platform to look for attributed referrals from ChatGPT. OpenAI says ChatGPT referral URLs use utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify visits originating from ChatGPT. This measures attributed traffic; it does not reveal a page’s ranking position, show every time content was considered, or measure citation quality.

OpenAI describes referral tracking in its publisher FAQ. Analytics software can help with that measurement, but no particular vendor is endorsed or necessary for crawler eligibility.

Confirm that OAI-SearchBot is not disallowed, verify that your infrastructure accepts its published IP ranges, and allow for the documented robots.txt adjustment period after a change. If those checks pass, the available OpenAI guidance does not establish why an individual page is absent or provide a method to guarantee its appearance. Treat visibility as uncertain rather than assuming that an access fix will produce a ranking or citation.
