If an Apple Health export seems to be missing records, first check whether the records exist in the relevant Health category. The export is an XML file; a gap may instead mean a device or app never wrote the data to Health, a source is not contributing to that category, or an app or account is not set up to share it. Apple’s documentation does not establish that exports routinely drop data, so trace the missing category back to its source before treating the export as the cause.
What an Apple Health export includes—and what it cannot show
Apple says Health can collect data from iPhone, Apple Watch, compatible third-party apps, connected devices, and manual entries. Which records appear depends on the data each source captures and contributes. Some measurements also depend on how an iPhone is carried or an Apple Watch is worn; compatible apps and Bluetooth devices may need setup before they contribute data. See Apple Support’s guide to sharing Health data and Apple’s Health data overview.
Apple’s export is all health and fitness data from Health in XML, a format Apple describes as common for sharing data between apps. As Apple explains in Share your data in Health on iPhone, the export reflects what Health has available; it cannot include a record that was never captured or written to Health. A record may also be unavailable to a particular app if that app lacks permission to read its category.
Trace the gap from the missing category back to its source
Start by naming the exact data type and time range—for example, a particular measurement on a specific day. Open that category in Health and check whether the records appear there. If they are absent from Health itself, focus on capture, source setup, and permissions before exporting again.

- Inspect the category’s sources. In Health, open the data category and subcategory, then tap Data Sources & Access. Apple says this list shows only sources that contribute to that specific type. Check that the expected source appears and is enabled. If several sources contribute, inspect their order: the source higher in the list takes priority, and newly added sources are placed at the top automatically. You can disable a third-party source from this screen. Apple’s instructions cover the source list and controls.
- Check category permissions and in-app sharing. In the Health profile, review the app or device under Privacy and confirm the needed read or write access for that category. Also check the app’s own sharing settings; some apps require both. These directions matter: an app that writes a measurement to Health needs permission to write, while a different app that displays or exports Health data needs permission to read. Apple’s Health sharing guide explains the controls, and its HealthKit security guide notes that a query without read access returns no data, intentionally in a way that cannot be distinguished from an empty database.
- For Apple Watch data, verify Fitness Tracking. Go to Health → profile → Devices → Apple Watch → Privacy Settings and make sure Fitness Tracking is on. This is Apple’s recommended check when Watch data is missing. Apple Support.
- For records that differ between devices, check sync prerequisites. Apple says Health syncing requires the devices to be signed in to the same Apple Account, an internet connection, and an updated operating system. Check all three on each device. Apple documents iCloud Health storage and encrypted computer backups, but does not promise that syncing or restoring recreates records that were never captured. Apple Support’s Health sharing guidance.
- For clinical records, check the provider connection. Automatic downloads depend on a participating health organization and may not be available in every region. If a record expected from a provider is missing, confirm that the provider supports the feature and that you are signed in to the provider account. A clinical record should not be assumed to be present in every Health export. Apple’s guide to health records.
- Export again after checking the relevant source. In Health, tap Summary → profile picture or initials → Export All Health Data, then choose a sharing method. The exported file is XML. Creating a fresh export may reflect records already available in Health, but it will not recover data that was never recorded there. Apple Support.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you see | Where to check | What it can establish |
|---|---|---|
| The category is empty in Health and the export | Data Sources & Access; the source app or device; category write permission and in-app sharing | Whether an expected source contributes to that category and whether it is allowed to write. |
| Health shows records but another app does not | The other app’s read permission for that category and its own sharing settings | Whether the receiving app can read the records; no read access can look like an empty database to that app. |
| Records are present but conflicting or not the expected ones are displayed | Source order in Data Sources & Access | Which contributing source Health prioritizes when multiple sources provide the same type. |
| Watch-derived data is missing | Fitness Tracking in the Apple Watch Health privacy settings | Whether the recommended Watch tracking setting is enabled. |
| Devices show different Health data | Apple Account, internet connection, and OS updates on both devices | Whether Apple’s stated Health sync prerequisites are met. |
| A provider record is absent | Provider participation and region availability; sign-in to the provider account | Whether the provider feature is available and the account connection is in place. |
What the evidence does not establish
Apple documents the export format and troubleshooting paths, but the available guidance does not establish that exports are immune to software defects or identify the cause of any individual missing record. It also does not quantify how often exports have gaps. Use the category and source checks to narrow down the issue rather than assuming either a widespread export problem or a single cause.
