If you want your Android phone to type on a computer, TV, tablet, or another phone, the phone must support Bluetooth HID Device mode—and the receiving device must accept Bluetooth HID keyboards. Android’s API exists, but support depends on the phone’s firmware, and pairing alone cannot add the role to a phone that lacks it.
First check which device is meant to do the typing: connecting a physical keyboard to your Android phone is the opposite Bluetooth setup.
First, confirm which device should type
There are two different Bluetooth setups that are easy to confuse:
- Physical keyboard to Android phone: the keyboard sends keystrokes to the phone. Use Android’s standard Bluetooth pairing process.
- Android phone to another device: the phone sends keystrokes to a computer, TV, tablet, or other receiver. The phone needs to act as a Bluetooth HID device, or Human Interface Device.
Seeing the other device in your Android Bluetooth settings does not show that the phone can act as a keyboard. Bluetooth connection and the HID keyboard role are separate requirements.

What must work for a phone to act as a Bluetooth keyboard
The phone must expose the HID Device role
Android provides the BluetoothHidDevice API beginning at API level 28, but the API’s existence does not guarantee that a specific phone’s firmware exposes the role to apps. App publishers warn that availability depends on the phone and its firmware. Check the compatibility guidance for your exact model and Android or firmware version; a generic Android version number is not enough to establish support. See the Android BluetoothHidDevice API reference and app-specific notes for Pocket KBM.
The receiving device must accept Bluetooth HID keyboards
The target computer, TV, tablet, or other device also has to accept Bluetooth HID input. The Bluetooth Keyboard Controller listing states that both phone-side HID peripheral support and receiver-side HID support are required. This is the app publisher’s compatibility guidance, not a guarantee for every receiver or a survey of all Android phones. See the Bluetooth Keyboard Controller listing.

An app may need to register the phone and receive permission
Android’s API says, “Connections to HID Device are only possible when application is registered.” Open the app you chose and enable or register its HID function if required before trying to connect. Apps targeting Android 12 (API 31) or later need the BLUETOOTH_CONNECT permission for relevant operations; grant the Bluetooth permission the app requests if you intend to use it. The exact controls depend on the app. Details are in the Android API reference.
How to pair the phone as a keyboard
- Check compatibility in the phone app. Confirm that its guidance covers your exact phone model and firmware, and that the receiver supports Bluetooth HID input. App availability in Google Play by itself does not prove either device is compatible.
- Open the app and register or enable HID mode. Grant the Bluetooth permission it requests. Android only permits HID connections after an app registers as a HID device.
- Open Bluetooth settings on the receiving device. If the app instructs you to pair from the receiver, search for nearby Bluetooth devices there and select the phone’s advertised device name. Bluetooth Keyboard Controller describes this registration-then-select sequence; names and menus vary by app and receiver.
- Follow any on-screen pairing prompt. Complete any confirmation or code entry shown by the app or receiver. If the phone is not advertised or the connection does not complete, use the checks below rather than repeatedly pairing from the wrong side.
App setup instructions are app-specific. For example, see the Bluetooth Keyboard Controller listing for its stated pairing direction.

If the phone will not connect
The app says the phone does not support HID
If the app reports that the phone lacks the HID Device role, ordinary pairing retries cannot supply missing firmware support. App publishers describe this capability as dependent on the phone’s firmware. Check the app’s compatibility information for your exact device; no population-level figure establishes how many Android phones support the role. See Pocket KBM’s compatibility notes.
The phone appears, but the receiver will not pair
Confirm that the receiver supports Bluetooth HID keyboards and that the app has registered HID mode before pairing. If the app or device instructions identify an old pairing as a problem, remove that pairing from both devices and retry using those instructions. There is no single reset sequence established for every Android build and receiver.

The phone pairs, then disconnects
Check compatibility for the specific phone firmware and target operating system. Cordless’s Google Play listing reports a pairing caveat affecting some Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones; this is the publisher’s report, not an independently measured estimate or evidence that all phones from those brands are affected. See the Cordless listing.
