Yahoo recommendations depend on where you see them. Yahoo News App feeds use selected topics; the mobile homepage offers news and recommended articles based on your interests; and Yahoo Search may show personal results drawn from Yahoo Mail. Each surface has different controls, so start by identifying the screen before changing a setting.
Why is Yahoo showing me this story?
Yahoo documents different personalization behavior for different products, not one universal recommendation switch. Its mobile homepage help says, “We customize the news on your Yahoo homepage and recommended articles based on your interests.” For the Yahoo News App, Yahoo says selected topics personalize the feed, while important stories from other topics may still appear. Signed-in Yahoo Search can show personal results such as package delivery notices and deals or coupons based on Yahoo Mail information.
Yahoo’s help pages do not explain a complete ranking formula, the relative weight of signals, or how quickly changes take effect. The controls below reflect the factors Yahoo does identify; they do not guarantee that every recommendation will disappear or change immediately. Interface labels may move over time, so use the closest matching labels in your current app or account.
Change recommendations in the Yahoo News App
Manage topics and interests
Yahoo requires at least five topics to be selected. Your selected interests also appear as navigation tabs, which you can reorder; selecting topics does not exclude every other subject because Yahoo says important news from all topics may still appear.

- Open the Yahoo News App and tap Profile.
- Tap Settings, then Content preferences.
- Choose Manage interests, select or deselect topics, and tap Continue to save. Keep at least five topics selected.
Block a publisher or words in article titles
These options filter feed content without changing the broader privacy settings described later.
- Block a publisher: Go to Profile → Settings → Content preferences → Block publishers and select publishers. Return to the list to unblock one.
- Block a title term: Go to Profile → Settings → Content preferences → Block keywords & phrases, add a phrase, and save. Yahoo says matching article titles are removed from For you and topic feeds. Its help page says you can block only one keyword or phrase at a time.
Understand the News App activity setting
Yahoo treats the activity-based content setting separately from interest choices and feed filters. Its help page says the News App requires content personalization to be allowed: if Articles and Media Based on Your Activity is set to Don’t Allow, the app displays a message requiring permission to use the app.

- Choose Go to privacy settings → Your privacy controls → Articles and Media Based on Your Activity → Manage.
- Allow Use my activity to make my content on Yahoo more relevant.
- Return to the News App and reopen it.
Yahoo says you can use Yahoo News on desktop or mobile web if you do not want to change this setting.
See less from a publisher on the Yahoo mobile homepage
Yahoo’s mobile homepage has its own publisher control. In a mobile web browser, sign in, swipe left on a headline, and tap Show Less. To restore that publisher, open Profile → Manage Publishers, tap the X beside the publisher, then tap Done.

Remove personal results from Yahoo Search
Yahoo says signed-in Search may use Yahoo Mail information to show personal results such as delivery notices and deals or coupons. Yahoo also says connected Gmail or AOL accounts may provide results. This feature is distinct from News feed interests and homepage publisher filtering.
- Open Yahoo Search Preferences while signed in.
- Deselect the personal results you want to remove, then save.
Yahoo warns that personal results could be visible to someone using a shared device if you remain signed in. Sign out when finished, or opt out of the relevant personal results. Yahoo says signed-in Search preferences can be changed from any computer or mobile device; if you are not signed in, preferences are saved only on that device.

Limit commercial-email data used for ads and content
Yahoo describes commercial emails as structured messages from retailers and other organizations, and says it does not analyze friends’ and family’s emails for this personalization purpose. Yahoo says commercial-email data may be used to personalize ads and content across Yahoo sites and services. Its Commercial Email Insights and Analysis preference is in the Privacy Dashboard and Controls page.
Yahoo says opting out does not remove ads or content; they may simply be less relevant. This is Yahoo’s description of its practice, not an independent audit of its systems. This control is separate from the News App’s Articles and Media Based on Your Activity setting.

Yahoo also offers broader account privacy controls for viewing and managing information associated with its products and services, plus a Download My Data process. Yahoo says a requested download can take up to 30 days to become available and, once available, can be retrieved for 30 days. That data-access process is not a recommendation-tuning control.
