In a New York Times interview, as reported by GameSpot on October 27, 2025, Booty said Xbox increasingly competes with entertainment such as TikTok and movies for people’s attention. The comment came as Xbox announced that Halo: Campaign Evolved would also be available on PS5.
What Matt Booty said about TikTok and Xbox
GameSpot reported Booty’s words from a New York Times interview as: “Our biggest competition isn’t another console. We are competing more and more with everything from TikTok to movies.” Discussing the decision to release Halo on a rival platform, Booty also said, “We are all seeking to meet people where they are.” The original New York Times page was not accessible to independently verify the interview, so the wording here is attributed to Booty as reported by GameSpot.

The key distinction is what “competition” means. PlayStation competes with Xbox as a gaming platform; TikTok and movies compete for the time and attention people might otherwise spend playing games. Booty’s statement is a strategic framing, not a measured ranking that places TikTok above PlayStation as a direct product competitor.
Why Xbox would release Halo on PS5
The remark was reported alongside the announcement that Halo: Campaign Evolved would be available on PS5. Xbox described a goal of bringing more players into its ecosystem by making major franchises available to a wider audience. A game released on rival hardware can reach people who do not own an Xbox console; the quote does not establish that this was the sole reason for the PS5 release.

This helps explain why a rival console can be both a competitor and a place Xbox chooses to publish a game. The company can compete for players and subscriptions while also seeking a broader audience for games it owns. The announcement and Booty’s comments do not, by themselves, establish that Xbox is abandoning its hardware or ending console exclusives as a whole.
How Xbox’s broader strategy fits the comment
In an official Xbox business discussion in 2024, Booty said large games such as Roblox and Fortnite could be bigger than any one platform. He described a shift from a model in which the platform itself was the primary draw, while also discussing Xbox’s commitment to its platform and Game Pass and its aim to bring more games to more players.

That discussion also connected cross-play and cross-save with letting people play with friends on the devices they choose. Phil Spencer said Xbox intended to build for play across multiple places, including through cloud gaming and content. He called Xbox hardware a “critical component,” while acknowledging that not every Xbox player would use hardware built by Xbox. Together, these statements describe a strategy that values hardware but does not treat a single device as the only route to Xbox games or players.
Is TikTok actually taking players from Xbox?
The statements cited here do not quantify how much time people spend on TikTok compared with games, show that the same audiences are switching between them, or measure whether short-form video is displacing console play. Booty’s comment identifies a broad competition for attention; it is not evidence of direct audience substitution.

There is also a counterview. In 2025, Mike Ybarra, a former Blizzard president and former Xbox corporate vice president, argued that gaming competes for time differently from short-form video: games tend to be longer experiences, and their audiences do not completely overlap. That is Ybarra’s opinion, not a measured rebuttal proving Booty’s framing wrong.

In 2020, Phil Spencer identified Amazon and Google as future competitors in a discussion focused on cloud gaming and broader access to games. That earlier comment shows that Xbox leadership has previously described competition beyond console makers. It reflects a different moment and context, however, and does not prove that the same companies or priorities remain unchanged.

What the quote does—and does not—tell you
- It does: show that Booty sees Xbox competing for attention across entertainment categories, not only against another console.
- It does not: establish that TikTok is a direct equivalent to PlayStation, that it draws more players away from Xbox, or that Xbox has given up on hardware.
- It does: fit Xbox’s stated interest in reaching players across devices, including through cross-play, cross-save, and games released beyond Xbox hardware.
- It does not: settle the future of Xbox exclusives or explain every reason behind the Halo PS5 release.
