Genome studies of Wolffia australiana offer clues to its tiny, rootless form: researchers found losses of genes linked to root development and other plant functions, as well as unusually limited time-of-day gene activity in one set of tested conditions. Those findings help explain its present-day body plan, but they do not prove one complete evolutionary path or a single cause for its size.
What makes Wolffia so small?
Wolffia australiana is described as the smallest known flowering monocot. Its body is radically simplified: a tiny floating frond, essentially a fused leaf and stem, with no roots or vascular tissue. Michael and colleagues reported studied plants at about 1 mm in size and a roughly one-day doubling time; these are descriptions of the plants in their study, not guarantees for every Wolffia species or growing condition.
The leading genomic clue is loss and reshaping of genes involved in development and plant function. Genome comparisons found that W. australiana lacks hundreds of genes conserved in other flowering plants, including genes associated with root development and light signaling. That pattern is consistent with a plant that no longer builds many structures familiar from land plants. It does not, by itself, show exactly when or why each structure disappeared.
What the genome studies found
Genome size and gene content
Michael et al. reported a 357 Mb draft genome and about 15,000 predicted protein-coding genes for W. australiana in Genome Research in 2021. Their analysis identified losses among genes conserved across flowering plants. A separate 2021 comparison by Park et al. in Communications Biology identified 246 missing gene clusters and 17 overrepresented clusters in its specific comparison. These are study-specific cluster counts, not a total tally of every gene lost over Wolffia’s evolutionary history.

- Echinodorus bleheri from South America is undemanding and beautiful, and becomes 20-50 cm tall.
- A nutritious bottom promotes growth, but the plant needs pruning to prevent it depriving plants underneath of light.
- Echinodorus bleheri does well even in poorly illuminated aquariums, as it grows towards the light. It is a hardy and easy solitary plant for both beginners and the more experienced with quite large aquariums. It has been sold under the name "Paniculatus".
Time-of-day gene activity
Michael et al. also measured gene expression over time. Under the conditions they tested, 13% of Wolffia genes showed time-of-day expression, compared with roughly 40% typically reported for several model plants under the same condition. This suggests a difference in how much gene activity followed a daily pattern in that experiment. It does not establish that reduced time-of-day regulation caused the plant’s small size.
Evidence and interpretation
The two studies illuminate related but distinct aspects of the plant. Michael et al. combined a genome with time-of-day transcriptome data and compared gene losses; Park et al. examined genome features alongside anatomy and aquatic physiology, including root degeneration, upper-surface stomata, survival as an anaerobic turion, and extensive genome rearrangements. Both provide plausible links between genomic change and Wolffia’s unusual form. Neither reconstructs a definitive sequence of evolutionary events for the whole genus.

- Jungle val plants are easy to grow and are quite robust. Please keep in mind they tend to melt back a fair amount initially when transplanted so expect that. It's best to trim the tops and then plant as normal when you receive them.
How can a flowering plant have no roots?
Wolffia lives floating in water, where a small rootless body can persist without the familiar anchoring and water-uptake structures of a terrestrial plant. The observed absence of roots fits with the reported losses of genes associated with root development. Park et al. discuss this as part of the plant’s aquatic specialization, while treating the role of particular gene-family changes as a possible explanation rather than a fully tested account of how rootlessness arose.
The same caution applies to its other unusual traits. The studies describe stomata on the upper surface and the ability to survive as an anaerobic turion, a dormant structure formed under unfavorable conditions. These features help characterize its aquatic biology; the available findings do not establish that any one trait or gene loss independently produced miniaturization.

What the findings do—and do not—explain
- Supported: Wolffia has an unusually simplified body plan, and genome comparisons reveal losses and changes in gene families associated with development and other functions.
- Supported in one experiment: A smaller proportion of its genes showed time-of-day expression than is typically reported for several model plants under the tested condition.
- Not established: A single proven cause, a complete historical sequence of miniaturization, or a conclusion that applies in every detail to every Wolffia species.
Michael et al. summarized their interpretation this way: “The Wolffia genome and TOD expression data set thus provide insight into the interplay between a streamlined plant body plan and optimized growth.” The key word is “insight”: the research connects genomic and expression patterns with the plant’s form and growth, rather than proving a complete origin story.

- LIVE AQUARIUM PLANT - 1 Sprouted Tiger Lotus Bulb Plant (Nymphaea Lotus)
- SIZE: We send bulbs that are already sprouted and ready to grow. We try to send smaller size plants as the tiger lotus are very fragile so the leaves will break or snap off if the plant is large. Bulb size ranges from half an inch to 1 inch and the sprouts will be 1cm to 3cm sometimes send larger plants based on what looks the best at the time of shipment. Rest assured we will send you a healthy plant ready to grow. Size will vary slightly as these are live plants.
- LIVE ARRIVAL - We stand behind live arrival on all of our livestock provided you don't order when temperatures are expected to go below 30F at the lowest point during the day.
