If Windows shows the same free space after you delete files, first confirm you are checking the same drive, then empty the Recycle Bin. Deleting a file may only move it to the bin, and deleting files from one volume cannot free space on another. File Explorer and Windows Storage settings can help identify what is still using space.

Check whether the files were actually removed

  1. Check the right drive. Open File Explorer > This PC and note the available space for the drive that held the deleted files. Compare that figure with the same drive after cleanup; deleting from one volume will not increase free space on another. Microsoft’s free-space guidance explains how to check and manage drive space.
  2. Empty the Recycle Bin. If you deleted files normally, they may still be in the bin. Empty it, then check the same drive again. Microsoft notes that files must be removed from the Recycle Bin to completely free their space. This permanently removes those items, so review the contents first.

Use Windows Storage settings to find what is taking space

Open Settings > System > Storage. Windows groups usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, and system and reserved storage. These categories describe different kinds of use: deleting personal files may not reduce space attributed to apps or system and reserved storage. Review the categories rather than expecting every deletion to affect the same one. Microsoft explains the Storage settings and Storage Sense controls.

Review Cleanup recommendations

In Storage settings, open Cleanup recommendations to review suggested items. Windows may identify temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Check what each category contains and remove only items you recognize and want to delete; a recommendation is not a reason to remove files blindly. See Microsoft’s instructions for freeing drive space.

Check Storage Sense settings before enabling cleanup

Storage Sense can clean temporary files and Recycle Bin contents according to its configuration. It works on the system drive, usually C:, and does not clean Downloads or cloud content unless the relevant options are configured. Settings apply per user, so another user account’s choices may differ. Review the settings and retention choices before turning on automatic cleanup; do not enable every option without checking what it will remove. Microsoft’s Storage Sense guide describes the controls.

Move files you want to keep off the drive

If the aim is to keep files while reclaiming local space, move them to an external drive, such as a USB drive or SD card. Wait for the copy or move to finish, and verify the files are accessible from the destination before removing any remaining local copies. Moving files does not address a Recycle Bin, wrong-drive, or reporting issue; it helps only when the files are the space you want to reclaim. Microsoft lists external storage as an option in its drive-space guidance.

Less common NTFS reasons space may appear unchanged

Consider these only after checking the drive, Recycle Bin, and Storage categories. They are filesystem behaviors, not the usual first explanation for a single deleted file.

Another hard link still refers to the file

NTFS can give the same file data more than one directory entry, called a hard link. Deleting one path does not free the underlying data while another hard link remains. This can matter when the same file appears under multiple paths or when storage totals seem inconsistent. Microsoft describes hard links and junctions in Windows.

A program still has the file open

Windows can mark a file for deletion while a process still holds it open; removal completes after the process releases its handle. Close the application that may be using the file, or restart the PC, then check free space again. Microsoft documents this mechanism in its file deletion troubleshooting guidance, which is oriented toward Windows Server. It describes a possible Windows behavior, not a diagnosis for every home PC.

NTFS metadata may not shrink after many small files are deleted

NTFS records file information in the Master File Table (MFT). When files are deleted, their records can be marked free for reuse, while the allocated MFT space itself does not necessarily shrink. This may account for some filesystem overhead after deleting a very large number of small files; it is not the expected explanation for an ordinary single-file deletion. Microsoft explains this behavior in its NTFS file system performance documentation.

What to do if the free-space figure still has not changed

  1. Recheck File Explorer > This PC for the specific drive that contained the files.
  2. Empty the Recycle Bin if the deleted files are there, then check that drive again.
  3. Review Settings > System > Storage to see whether space is used by personal files, temporary files, apps, or system and reserved storage.
  4. Inspect Cleanup recommendations and remove only items you intend to remove.
  5. Review Storage Sense settings if you want Windows to clean eligible temporary files or Recycle Bin contents automatically.
  6. If the discrepancy remains large, close likely apps or restart and recheck. Do not jump to third-party cleanup utilities or manually delete Windows folders; further diagnosis depends on the drive, file system, permissions, and the state of the PC. Microsoft’s broader NTFS disk-space troubleshooting article is specifically for Windows Server 2003, so its specialized cases should not be treated as common explanations for a modern Windows PC.
