The exact behavior depends on the computer’s sleep model, and Microsoft’s documentation describes Windows behavior—not a test of any particular AI agent. An application can ask Windows to stay awake while work is active by using SetThreadExecutionState, but that request has limits and should not be held indefinitely.
Why sleep can interrupt an AI coding agent
An AI coding agent running as an ordinary desktop application relies on the computer continuing to execute its work. When Windows enters a sleep state, that execution may stop or be suppressed. If the agent is waiting for a model response, running commands, or handling files, the result can be stalled progress until the system resumes.
This is a plausible explanation for an agent stopping after a PC idles, not proof that sleep caused every interruption. Microsoft’s sleep documentation does not specifically test AI coding agents, and an agent can also pause for reasons unrelated to power management.
“Sleep” means different things on different Windows PCs
The user-facing Sleep command does not identify the underlying power model. Microsoft distinguishes Modern Standby, which uses S0 low-power idle, from traditional sleep states S1–S3. A system that supports Modern Standby does not support S1–S3.

These are platform behaviors, not an AI-agent-specific failure rate. Microsoft publishes no figure here for how often sleep interrupts coding agents.
What a Windows application can request
Windows provides SetThreadExecutionState for an application to signal that it is in use and request that the system avoid sleeping or turning off the display. Microsoft describes this as an application-facing mechanism for communicating ongoing activity. It is not a command that makes a computer immune to sleep: the API cannot prevent a user from manually putting the machine to sleep.

For an agent utility, the important design choice is to associate the request with active work rather than keep it asserted around the clock. Microsoft’s System Sleep Criteria documentation warns: “Avoid holding ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED | ES_CONTINUOUS indefinitely.” On Modern Standby devices, continuously asserting the system-required state can increase battery drain.
How to think about a C# keep-awake utility
A small C# program could be one way to call the Windows API, but the language and file size do not establish that it works, handles errors, or is safe for a particular workflow. Treat such a utility as an implementation choice to verify, not as an official Microsoft fix. The author-specific claim in the title—that a 90 KB utility fixed the problem and produced a successful result—could not be corroborated from the available evidence, so its implementation and outcome should not be taken as established facts.

Before relying on any keep-awake approach, check what it requests and when:
- Scope: Does it request that the system stay awake, the display stay on, or both?
- Duration: Is the request limited to active agent work and cleared when that work ends?
- Limits: Does it explain that a user can still manually put the PC to sleep?
- Failure handling: Does it report when it cannot set the requested execution state?
- Power cost: Could an unnecessarily long request keep a Modern Standby device awake and drain its battery?
These checks distinguish a bounded activity request from an always-on workaround. The available documentation does not validate a particular third-party utility or establish that any one tool handles these cases correctly.

Practical next steps
- Confirm the symptom. Note whether the agent stops progressing only after the PC sleeps and resumes after wake. This is a useful clue, not a conclusive diagnosis.
- Identify the sleep model. Consult Microsoft’s documentation for Modern Standby and traditional sleep; do not infer the model from the Sleep label alone.
- Choose a bounded remedy. For software that uses
SetThreadExecutionState, prefer a request scoped to active work and ensure it is cleared afterward. If you use a separate utility, verify its scope, duration, failure reporting, and effect on battery life rather than assuming its size or language proves reliability. - Keep manual sleep in mind. The API request does not override a user manually putting the computer to sleep, so it is not a way to guarantee uninterrupted execution in that case.
