Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 10240 was a near-final milestone in the run-up to Windows 10’s public launch—not a specially named edition or a formal release designation in Microsoft’s announcement. Microsoft released it to Insiders on July 15, 2015, calling it “one step closer” to the version customers would begin receiving on July 29.

What made Build 10240 special?

Its significance was its timing and role. Microsoft was preparing the release pipelines and processes for Windows 10’s July 29, 2015 launch, while continuing to use the Windows Insider program to distribute preview builds and collect feedback. In its July 15 announcement, Microsoft described Build 10240 as a step closer to the version customers would receive.

“Special purpose” is a useful description of that transition, not Microsoft’s name for a separate Windows edition. The announcement calls it a new build and does not formally designate it as RTM. The distinction matters: a build can be a major pre-launch milestone without the source establishing a particular release label.

Why did the desktop watermark disappear?

Microsoft noted that the desktop watermark was no longer present in Build 10240 and suggested checking the version through Search > Winver. The missing watermark was a visible change consistent with the build’s proximity to launch, but it does not by itself establish that Microsoft assigned Build 10240 a formal RTM status or a separate purpose.

What happened to Insiders after this build?

The Insider program did not end with Build 10240. Microsoft said it would continue, giving participants access to early builds and a way to share feedback as Windows received ongoing improvements. The July 2 launch-planning post also said Microsoft was testing and listening to signals from five million Windows Insiders at that time; that was Microsoft’s 2015 figure, not a current membership count. See Microsoft’s July 2, 2015 launch-planning post.

How were Insiders meant to receive the public release?

Microsoft’s June 2015 guidance described different paths depending on edition and eligibility. These were historical launch arrangements, not current upgrade instructions.

Case What Microsoft said in 2015
Home or Pro Insider Registered Insiders with their registered Microsoft account connected would receive the final release as another flight beginning July 29.
Free upgrade eligibility The free upgrade offer applied to devices running genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.
Insider Preview Enterprise Enterprise followed a distinct Volume Licensing/Software Assurance path.

These distinctions are set out in Microsoft’s June 2015 answers about Windows 10. Microsoft also said Build 10240 would be delivered to Fast and Slow ring Insiders through Windows Update and that a Microsoft account was required to receive that flight.

Can you download or activate Build 10240 today?

The cited historical announcements do not establish that Build 10240 is currently available to download, can be activated, or is supported. Microsoft’s activation support page describes Windows activation using a digital license or product key and includes historical information about qualifying Insider upgrades; it does not confirm present-day availability or support for this specific build.
