VR Bangers’ Head Rig 2.0 was a 2018 proof-of-concept camera helmet for recording adult VR video from a performer’s point of view. Its seven-camera array, binaural microphones and live-monitoring displays suggest a different way to capture immersive footage—but the prototype’s promise is a production idea, not proof that it improved viewer experience or became a mainstream format.
What was the VR “sex helmet”?
Head Rig 2.0 was a wearable camera system designed to put the recording equipment on a human performer rather than on a detached mannequin head. Futurism reported on December 20, 2018, that VR Bangers had revealed the proof of concept. Mixed.de’s technical account described a first unit made with 3D printing and undergoing tests.
The rig’s spider-like shape came from its multiple outward-facing cameras. Reports described seven cameras, binaural microphones, image stabilization and two displays inside the helmet. Mixed.de reported capture at up to 8K and a 300-degree field of view; Futurism also reported VR Bangers’ claim of a 300-degree filming view. Those are reported specifications, not results from an independent comparison with other cameras.
How was a seven-camera VR helmet meant to work?
Instead of filming from a fixed camera mounted on a mannequin head, the system was worn by a performer. The cameras were intended to record the surrounding scene from that moving position, while binaural microphones captured spatial audio. The two internal displays let the wearer see a live view while filming, according to the 2018 reports.

The screens were for monitoring the camera feed, not evidence that the helmet itself was a viewing headset. The available accounts do not explain how the seven camera feeds were stitched together, how the microphones were positioned, or what resolution was available across the full field of view. “Up to 8K” should therefore be read as a reported maximum, not a guarantee that every part of every recording had that resolution.
Why put the camera on a performer?
A mannequin-head camera can capture a first-person scene, but it is physically separate from the person acting in it. The wearable design aimed to keep the camera’s position tied to a human performer, potentially making eye contact and physical interaction feel more natural in the resulting video.

Future of Sex reported that the helmet was intended to replace an earlier mannequin-head arrangement. Producer Xander Jones said the older rig had problems and that not all performers liked using it. A wearable system could address some of those production difficulties, but it also puts equipment directly on the performer. The cited reports do not establish how comfortable it was during filming or whether it was easier to use overall.
Stabilization and binaural audio address two other production concerns: unwanted camera movement and a sense of where sounds occur around the viewer. These features may support immersion, but no controlled study in the cited coverage measured whether viewers found Head Rig 2.0 footage more comfortable or convincing.

Could adult video technology drive a mainstream VR format?
It is plausible that adult-video producers would experiment with ways to make immersive footage feel more immediate. Futurism’s 2018 coverage, citing The New York Times, reported a 275 percent increase in PornHub VR-video views between 2016 and 2017. That figure describes reported view growth over those two years; it does not show that adult entertainment caused a broader VR trend or that Head Rig 2.0 influenced other camera makers.
The broader possibility is that a practical production technique developed for one genre could prove useful elsewhere. A performer-worn rig might be relevant wherever creators want a moving first-person perspective, spatial sound and interaction that feels connected to the person wearing the camera. But translating a prototype into a widely used format would also depend on image quality, wearer comfort, editing workflow and cost—none of which the cited accounts establish as resolved.

Was Head Rig 2.0 sold to consumers?
There is no documented consumer release in the cited coverage. VR Bangers marketing director Ignor Zhivago told CNET, in a statement quoted by Futurism, that the company was keeping the rigs for its own productions to maintain a competitive edge. That supports internal production use, not a retail launch.
The available reporting does not establish a public price, a later successor model, a patent outcome or adoption as a standard for VR video. Head Rig 2.0 is best understood as a documented experiment in performer-worn capture, not a product readers can be assumed to buy or a technology proven to define the future of VR.
