Tamagotchi put that ritual in a handheld device; Neopets made a pet the gateway to a wider browser world. Their staying power depends on more than nostalgia: a recognizable core helps, but online worlds also need active maintenance and care for their communities.
Why do virtual pet games feel like the early internet?
Many early online experiences were less like launching a single polished app and more like visiting a destination: a site with games, pages to personalize, people to meet and new things to discover. Neopets brought those elements together around virtual pets. Its world used text, images and simple Flash animations, making it accessible over slow connections, according to ACMI’s account of Neopets.
That combination made the pet both a companion and a reason to explore. Players could care for creatures, play mini-games, trade items, join forums and guilds, and customize profiles. Site-wide storylines gave the world a shared history: during the 2003 Champions of Meridell plot, players chose sides, and Darigan’s victory became part of official lore. Neopets could therefore be remembered not just as a pet-care game but as a place where personal play and collective events overlapped.
The scale of that activity is part of the historical context, not a measure of current use. ACMI records one trillion page views by 2011; The Guardian reported more than 25 million active users at Neopets’ mid-2000s peak in an April 2024 article. Neither figure shows that nostalgia or any single feature caused the site’s longevity.

How did Tamagotchi and Neopets create different kinds of attachment?
Tamagotchi and Neopets connected care to routine in different settings: one made the pet portable and immediate; the other placed the pet within a larger web destination. That distinction helps explain why each could feel memorable without making one format inherently better.

Tamagotchi made care portable
Bandai says the original Tamagotchi launched in Japan on November 23, 1996. Its handheld format put a persistent virtual pet into everyday life. Wellcome Collection describes a care loop of feeding, cleaning, playing and medicating in real time; neglect could lead to the pet’s death. That made small actions feel consequential, but could also bring guilt or grief.

Bandai describes a stable physical identity across generations: an egg-shaped device with an LCD screen and three buttons, while features have evolved. Its corporate newsletter reports that 10 million units were sold in Japan within eight months of launch. Bandai Namco Holdings later reported 100 million units shipped worldwide by the end of July 2025; that is the company’s shipment figure, not an independent sales audit. The Strong National Museum of Play gives a separate historical estimate of about 20 million units in Japan and another 20 million in other markets during the first year.
Neopets made the pet a doorway
Neopets launched in 1999 and used the browser to gather many kinds of play in one place. Its slower, simpler web presentation was not merely a technical limitation: it gave players room to move among games, community spaces, customization and evolving lore. That mix could make returning feel like revisiting a familiar world rather than opening one isolated game.

Why can a simple virtual pet feel more memorable than a more elaborate game?
One plausible explanation is the bond between a repeatable routine and a persistent identity. A pet that seems to need care can become part of the player’s daily rhythm; a familiar character or world can then act as a marker of a particular time in life. Neopets added another layer: players could remember not only a pet but also a customized page, a guild, a trade or a shared plot.
That is a design-and-cultural interpretation, not a proven universal effect. The accounts available describe product features and individual or reported player memories; they do not establish a controlled causal study showing that virtual pets produce stronger attachment than technically elaborate games.

In an April 2024 interview with The Guardian, Neopets CEO Dominic Law described old pets still being present when former players returned: “It’s like meeting back up with an old friend.” The remark captures one reported response to continuity, not a feeling every returning player will share. The Guardian also reported that roughly 40% of Neopets users were ages 25–34 and 26% were ages 18–24 at the time of its article; those are dated audience figures, not current demographics.

Keep the core recognizable while allowing it to evolve
Bandai’s account of Tamagotchi’s longevity emphasizes both consistency and change. Managing director and Chief Tamagotchi Officer Taro Tsuji said the fundamental design remained an egg-shaped device with an LCD screen and three buttons, while later models added features including infrared communication, Wi-Fi and NFC. Bandai also credits fan loyalty during periods when popularity waned and says it continued releasing new models every few years. This is the company’s explanation of its approach, not proof that any one feature guarantees longevity.

Maintain the service, not just the memories
An online world needs working infrastructure as well as a beloved identity. In a 2025 interview with Jellyneo, Neopets CEO Dominic Law said the company had realized that users most cared about Classic and that the existing site needed more repair work than expected. His point is practical: restoration, reliable access and improvements that serve the original experience are part of preservation.
The opposite case shows what can be lost. Wellcome Collection recounts the closure of Facebook game Pet Society after declining profits, including players’ grief and anger when their pets became inaccessible. A physical handheld can remain with its owner; an online pet depends on a service operator keeping the world available. Nostalgia may bring people back, but it cannot keep servers running by itself.
What the early-internet feeling does—and does not—mean
The feeling comes from a distinctive combination: a small personal relationship, a repeatable reason to return, and a larger space with its own customs, stories and people. Tamagotchi concentrated that experience in a portable care loop; Neopets spread it across a browser world. The details differ, but both made the player’s attention part of the design.
That mix can make a game feel like a time capsule when it survives. In The Guardian’s 2024 reporting, Law said the site’s limited updates had preserved elements of early internet culture. Yet the same reporting described technical decay and the work needed to restore functionality. Familiarity is meaningful only while the experience remains accessible enough to revisit.
