The action was a government sanctions designation, not a reported criminal conviction.
Why was Aleksandr Ermakov sanctioned?
The three governments linked Ermakov to the intrusion into Medibank’s network and the theft and release of customer information. The UK described him as a key actor in the attack; the US Treasury said he played a pivotal role in exfiltrating and releasing records. These are government attributions, not findings from a trial described in the announcements.
The UK said the identification came through work by the Australian Signals Directorate, Australian Federal Police and international partners. US Treasury said the action was coordinated with Australia and the UK, noting that Australia had sanctioned him on 22 January 2024, followed by US and UK action on 23 January.
The attack itself occurred in 2022: Treasury says the attacker infiltrated Medibank’s network in October that year. The sanctions were announced in January 2024, not at the time of the intrusion. The UK and US announcements are available from the UK government and US Treasury.

What information was exposed?
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said 9.7 million customer records containing medical and personal data were leaked on the dark web, along with data on more than 480,000 health claims. US Treasury described the affected information as relating to 9.7 million current and former customers and authorized representatives, and listed names, dates of birth and Medicare numbers among the personal details associated with the stolen records.
The UK said leaked material included treatment information relating to mental health, sexual health and drug use. That does not mean every affected person’s record contained each type of sensitive information. The agencies’ published figures are their own reported counts; they are not independent audits in the cited announcements.

What did the governments say about the attackers?
US Treasury said the actors behind the hack were believed to be linked to REvil, also known as Sodinokibi. That wording is an attribution with uncertainty, not proof that every person or operation associated with the incident was part of REvil.
Treasury also gave broader context about REvil, saying it had been deployed on approximately 175,000 computers globally and that at least $200 million in ransom had been paid in REvil ransomware incidents. Those figures concern REvil activity overall; they are not figures for the Medibank attack alone.

What do the sanctions mean?
The consequences depend on the jurisdiction. The US Treasury notice says the Office of Foreign Assets Control designated Ermakov under Executive Order 13694, as amended by Executive Order 13757. It provides for blocking property and interests in property within the United States or in the possession or control of US persons, with dealings subject to applicable authorization or exemption. These are US rules; the Treasury notice is not a full account of the separate legal consequences under UK or Australian law.
The UK and US announcements presented the sanctions as coordinated action to impose consequences for cyber activity. UK Sanctions Minister Anne-Marie Trevelyan said the UK would “continue to hold cyber hackers to account for damaging cyber attacks designed to undermine global democracies.” US Treasury Under Secretary Brian E. Nelson called the action “the first such coordinated action” and said it underscored the countries’ collective resolve to hold criminals to account.

Names and later record entries
The UK announcement names him as Aleksandr Ermakov; US Treasury uses the spelling Alexander Ermakov. Treasury’s notice lists aliases including blade_runner, GistaveDore, GustaveDore and JimJones.
The official records cited here establish the 2024 actions, but they do not establish that all three countries’ designations remain active as of 4 October 2026. The UK Sanctions List includes a record for Aleksandr Gennadievich Ermakov and notes a director-disqualification sanction imposed on 9 April 2025; OFAC’s historical entry records his addition to the US SDN List on 23 January 2024. Those entries alone do not verify current status across all three jurisdictions.
