Green is not a universal Android text color: it is how Apple Messages displays messages that are not iMessage, including messages sent between iPhones and Android phones. The meaning can also vary by app or conversation theme, so check the messaging app and its send-method indicator before reading too much into a bubble’s color.
What blue and green text bubbles mean
Blue in Google Messages
Google documents two blue shades in Google Messages: “Text messages are dark blue in the RCS state and light blue in the SMS/MMS state.” The color distinction identifies the messaging state in that app; it is not a universal Android convention. Other Android messaging apps may use different colors or meanings. Google Messages Help
Green in Apple Messages
When an Android user texts an iPhone, the iPhone’s Messages app displays the conversation as green because it is not using iMessage. That green is an Apple-side display convention, not an Android setting or a standard color for Android SMS. Apple also displays messages from iPhone users as green when iMessage is turned off. How to tell whether a message is RCS or SMS/MMS
- Check the app. Confirm that you are looking at Google Messages; its documented blue mapping may not apply in another app.
- Look at the compose bar. Google Messages indicates the send method, such as Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. This is more useful than guessing from the bubble alone. Google Messages RCS settings and status
- Check RCS status. In Google Messages, open the app’s settings and select RCS chats. Google documents states including Connected, Connecting, retry trouble, and Not supported. Labels can change with app updates.
- Check for a conversation theme. A custom theme can change bubble colors locally, so a different shade does not necessarily mean the sending protocol changed. Customize a conversation in Google Messages
What RCS changes compared with SMS or MMS
RCS is a richer messaging service than SMS and MMS. Depending on support and settings, Google Messages RCS can provide typing indicators, read receipts, high-resolution photo and video sharing, and messaging over Wi-Fi or mobile data. SMS and MMS use the traditional text and multimedia messaging routes. Google Messages Help: RCS features

| What to compare | RCS in Google Messages | SMS/MMS |
|---|---|---|
| Route | Wi-Fi or mobile data when available | SMS or MMS messaging |
| Availability | Requires RCS support and activation; RCS is used for a conversation when all participants have it enabled | Can be used when RCS is unavailable |
| Features | Can include typing indicators, read receipts, and high-resolution media | Does not provide the full RCS feature set |
| Encryption | End-to-end encryption is available for eligible conversations when both participants use Google Messages with RCS enabled; it should not be assumed for every RCS conversation | Not established as end-to-end encrypted by the cited Google RCS documentation |
RCS support depends on device, carrier, and region. Google says the provider may be Google or the user’s carrier under that carrier’s terms; if RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can fall back to SMS or MMS. Google’s RCS overview Google Messages RCS availability and status

Do not treat a blue bubble as a read receipt. In Google Messages, the shade identifies the RCS versus SMS/MMS state; delivery and read status are shown separately with status indicators when available. Whether those indicators appear depends on the conversation and its messaging setup. Google Messages Help
