Tesla ended Model S and Model X production in 2026 to redirect the Fremont factory space toward Optimus humanoid robots, part of CEO Elon Musk’s stated shift toward an autonomy-focused future. Production was reported ended earlier than mid-year, and Tesla said it would support existing owners for as long as they have their vehicles, though it did not specify the terms.
Why is Tesla discontinuing the Model S and Model X?
Tesla’s stated reason is strategic: the company wants to focus more on autonomy and Optimus, its humanoid-robot program. During the January 2026 quarterly earnings call, CEO Elon Musk said: “It’s time to basically bring the Model S and X programs to an end with an honorable discharge, because we’re really moving into a future that is based on autonomy.” (TechCrunch, January 28, 2026)
Tesla plans to repurpose the Fremont, California, production space used for the two cars to manufacture Optimus. Musk described a long-term goal of producing one million robots a year there. That figure is a target, not a report of current capacity or completed production. Tesla’s June 2026 quarterly filing said it was preparing and investing for large-scale Optimus manufacturing and acknowledged uncertainties involved in new manufacturing operations (Tesla Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026).
When did Tesla stop making the cars?
Tesla announced the decision in January 2026 and initially said it expected to make the final versions in the following quarter. A later transcript of Tesla’s Q1 2026 earnings call reported that production had ended earlier than mid-year, so the original expectation should not be treated as the final shutdown date (Q1 2026 earnings-call transcript).

Why were the Model S and Model X significant?
The Model S launched in 2012, followed by the Model X in 2015. Their retirement closes two prominent early Tesla vehicle programs, and the factory space they occupied is being redirected toward robotics. Tesla’s earlier September 2025 quarterly filing still listed Model S and Model X production at Fremont as active; it also described Optimus as a general-purpose autonomous humanoid robot under development (Tesla Form 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2025).
Did sales or competition play a role?
TechCrunch reported that Model S and Model X sales had flatlined in recent years despite refreshes and that Tesla faced increased competition in the luxury EV market. This provides commercial context, but Tesla’s announced explanation centered on its autonomy strategy. The report does not quantify the sales trend, and no specific sales figure or measured economic case for ending production is established here.

Will Tesla continue supporting Model S and Model X owners?
Tesla said it would support current owners “for as long as people have the vehicles,” according to TechCrunch’s report of the earnings call. The statement does not define how long particular services will be available or specify terms for parts, warranty coverage, software updates, repairs, or other support. Owners should check directly with Tesla for details relevant to their vehicle.
