Some changes include a short rest, but others—such as the switch after the first game of a set and switches during a tie-break—do not. The rules also allow a longer break between sets.
What does “change ends” mean in tennis?
To change ends is to switch to the opposite side of the court. It is a required match procedure, not necessarily a break. A changeover is the permitted rest at certain game-end switches, so the terms are related but do not mean the same thing.
When do players change ends?
Under the International Tennis Federation’s 2026 Rules of Tennis, players change ends at the end of the first game, the third game, and every later odd-numbered game in a set. They also normally change ends when a set finishes. If the set ends after an even number of games, however, they wait and change ends after the first game of the next set.
In a tie-break, players change ends after every six points.

How long are tennis breaks?

The time allowed runs from the end of one point until the first service of the next point. These are standard limits in the ITF’s 2026 rules; event organizers may apply to the ITF for approval to extend the 90- or 120-second periods. The rule’s general principle is continuous play from the match’s first service until it finishes.
There are limited exceptions and event-specific provisions. The rules allow reasonable extra time to replace clothing, footwear, or necessary equipment other than a racket when damage or replacement needs are outside a player’s control; extra time is not allowed simply to recover condition. A player with a treatable medical condition may be allowed one three-minute medical time-out. Organizers may announce limited toilet or change-of-attire breaks, and may provide a rest of up to ten minutes after the third set in a best-of-five match or the second set in a best-of-three match.

Why do players use the breaks?
The rules set the timing; they do not establish a specific scientific benefit of the schedule. The Women’s Tennis Association says changeovers allow players to recover mentally and physically at the bench. Players may also drink or eat a snack and review their game plan. These are practical uses of the interval, not a guarantee of a particular recovery effect.
