When those companies rise or fall in sync, a capitalization-weighted benchmark can move sharply even if many smaller stocks do not follow. That is market concentration, not proof that every tech stock behaves alike or that a reversal is imminent.
How a few large stocks can move a broad index
A capitalization-weighted index gives each company influence in proportion to its market value, often adjusted for the shares available to public investors. The larger the company’s weight, the more its return contributes to the index’s return. If several mega-cap, technology-linked companies rise together, they can lift a broad benchmark while many smaller constituents lag. Their simultaneous decline can have the opposite effect.
This is why a headline index can look strong even when the typical constituent is doing less well. The index is a portfolio governed by weighting rules; it is not a simple count of how many stocks advanced.
Concentration in the S&P 500
S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the ten largest S&P 500 companies represented almost 40% of the index by mid-2025, a level not seen since the mid-1960s. It attributed the increase to the outperformance and growing market values of a small number of mega-cap firms amid rapid technology change. The figure describes exposure in that index at that time. Concentration alone does not show that prices are wrong, that a bubble exists, or that a downturn is due. S&P Dow Jones Indices, “In the Shadows of Giants”

Technology exposure is not the same as “tech stocks”
Industry labels and broad descriptions do not always match. Some companies commonly described as technology-linked may be classified in other sectors, while an index sector measure includes only companies assigned to that sector under its classification rules. CME Group reported that information technology made up 39.6% of the S&P 500 in its 2026 article data. That sector weight should not be treated as the share represented by every company people informally call “tech.” CME Group, “Why U.S. Equity Benchmarks are Moving Together and Drifting Apart”
Why separate technology companies share price moves
Index weights explain how a small group can affect a benchmark; common business and financial exposures help explain why companies may move in the same direction in the first place. Similar firms can respond to the same news even when their products, customers, and prospects differ.

- Interest rates and discount rates: Changes in yields can alter how investors value expected future earnings. Monetary-policy news can also change equity risk premia. A rate move is not a mechanical signal that tech shares must rise or fall: it may also communicate information about inflation, growth, and risk. A May 2026 Federal Reserve research review discusses these channels and finds reaction-function news appears more important than information effects in its review. The paper is research and discussion; its conclusions do not necessarily represent the Board’s views. Federal Reserve FEDS 2026-023
- Expected growth and earnings: News that changes expectations for future revenue, margins, or investment returns can affect companies whose valuations depend on similar growth assumptions.
- Capital spending, demand, and supply chains: Companies may depend on overlapping customers, suppliers, infrastructure, or technology investment cycles, so one change in spending or demand can affect several businesses.
- Investor positioning and risk appetite: Investors may add or reduce exposure to a theme or a group of large companies together, transmitting a shared change in risk appetite into prices.
- Business and policy links: A shock to one company can affect suppliers, customers, and portfolios holding related firms. A New York Fed staff report revised in September 2026 examined U.S. export controls on technology sales to targeted Chinese firms. It reported lower share prices for U.S. suppliers and lower performance and higher volatility for funds more exposed to affected suppliers; portfolio changes also reached other U.S. exporters to China. This illustrates a possible transmission channel, not a uniform response to every geopolitical event. Federal Reserve Bank of New York Staff Report 1172
Correlation and volatility measure different things
Volatility describes the size of price or return fluctuations over a specified period. Correlation describes how strongly and in what direction two return series have moved together over a specified period. Neither is a fixed property of a stock or index. A group of individually volatile stocks can produce a less volatile portfolio if their movements offset; a benchmark can become more volatile when its largest holdings fall together.
Any correlation figure needs its pair of indexes or stocks and its measurement window. For example, CME Group reported a 0.98 12-month rolling correlation between the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 in March 2026. That is a particular rolling-window observation for those two indexes—not a universal correlation among technology stocks. The same article reported that, since 2020, correlations between the capitalization-weighted and equal-weighted S&P 500 were often around 0.8 on its six- and 12-month windows, with wider swings. What an equal-weight comparison can reveal
The S&P 500 is free-float-adjusted and market-cap-weighted. In the equal-weighted S&P 500, constituents receive roughly equal weights, with quarterly rebalancing, according to CME Group. Comparing the two can help distinguish a move led by the largest companies from one shared more broadly across constituents. The indexes answer different questions: capitalization weighting reflects the performance of larger listed companies in proportion to their market values, while equal weighting reduces the biggest companies’ relative influence.
Volatility changes with market conditions
The Federal Reserve Board’s November 2025 Financial Stability Report said option-implied and realized equity volatility rose dramatically in April 2025, then declined below their historical medians. The episode is a reminder that volatility can change quickly; it does not establish a permanent level for stocks or a dependable forecast of the next move. The report also describes a possible amplification channel: trading algorithms that respond similarly to events could intensify rapid swings. It notes countervailing factors, including richer information and more complex logic that may lead to less uniform responses; it does not establish that AI trading causes volatility. What option-implied correlation can—and cannot—tell you
Historical correlation summarizes how returns moved together in the past. Option-implied correlation uses option prices to estimate the co-movement investors are pricing for the future, subject to the assumptions used in the estimate. These are different measures, and neither guarantees what returns will do.
S&P Global Market Intelligence says implied-correlation estimates vary across option strikes and tend to be higher at lower strikes, indicating greater expected co-movement in downside states. It also cautions that estimates may be unavailable or unreliable for securities with less-liquid options markets. The source uses a historical value-weighted basket of seven leading technology stocks as a stress-scenario analogue: that basket fell 26.3% from March 24 to April 14, 2000. This is a past episode, not a prediction for today’s companies. S&P Global Market Intelligence, August 25, 2026

How to interpret a market move without overreading it
When a headline says “the market” or “tech stocks” moved, check what the measure actually covers. Two indexes can post similar returns while differing in concentration and breadth.
- Compare capitalization-weighted and equal-weighted performance. A gap between them can show whether the largest holdings are exerting outsized influence.
- Check the sector and largest-company weights. Confirm the index, date, and classification behind any technology exposure figure.
- Read the correlation window. A six-month rolling measure may tell a different story from a 12-month figure, and neither describes every stock pair.
- Separate realized from option-implied volatility. One reflects observed price changes; the other is inferred from option prices and reflects market pricing and assumptions.
- Look for shared factors as well as company-specific news. Common rate, earnings, demand, or positioning effects can coexist with developments unique to an individual company.
Concentration helps explain why large firms can steer an index, while common exposures help explain co-movement. Neither tells you that every technology company will move together, or that past correlations and volatility will persist.
