Valve’s published requirements for the general Steam for Linux desktop client specify an x86_64/AMD64 processor and kernel, along with both 64-bit and 32-bit x86 libraries and graphics drivers. Valve does not explain why it set that boundary. It is also not accurate to say Valve software never supports ARM: Valve documents SteamOS on the Arm64 Snapdragon processor in Steam Frame, with compatibility layers for other architectures.
What architecture does the standard Steam for Linux client require?
Valve’s Steam for Linux Client README lists a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel and processor. The processor must support the CMPXCHG16B and SSE3 instruction sets. The README also specifies both 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 and 32-bit i386/IA32 graphics drivers and glibc. In other words, the published target is not merely any 64-bit Linux system: it is an x86 Linux environment with 32-bit compatibility components.
The same README lists latest Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS, at least 512 MB of RAM, and 5 GB of storage. It says glibc 2.31 or newer is required beginning August 15, 2025. The memory and storage figures are client requirements, not recommendations for gaming performance.
Why is ARM outside those desktop requirements?
The requirements define what Valve documents for the general Linux desktop client; they do not explain the reasoning behind the boundary. Valve’s public documentation reviewed here does not identify a historical business or engineering motive, nor does it attribute the x86 target to any one factor.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It would be plausible to point to the cost of maintaining another architecture, existing dependencies, game availability, or support scope, but the sources do not establish any of those as Valve’s reason. The defensible answer is narrower: the published desktop-client requirements are x86-specific, while Valve has not publicly explained why it chose them.
Does Steam support ARM anywhere?
Yes. Valve documents a product-specific ARM64 Steam environment in its Steamworks Steam Frame compatibility guide. Valve says Steam Frame runs SteamOS, based on Arch Linux, on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip and includes compatibility layers for other operating systems and architectures.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That device-specific stack is distinct from installing the general Steam desktop client on an arbitrary ARM Linux computer. The Steam Frame documentation does not establish that other ARM distributions have the same host software, libraries, drivers, compatibility layers, or support status.
How Steam Frame handles games built for other systems
- Proton: Valve identifies Proton as the path for Windows games.
- FEX: Valve says FEX translates 32-bit and 64-bit x86 games into Arm64 instructions and forwards API calls to host system libraries.
- Lepton: Valve identifies Lepton as the compatibility path for Android games.
These are components of the Steam Frame environment. Their presence does not turn the standard desktop client’s published requirements into general ARM support.

Desktop Linux and Steam Frame are different support targets
| Comparison | General Steam for Linux desktop client | Steam Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Processor architecture | x86_64/AMD64 kernel and CPU, with CMPXCHG16B and SSE3, according to Valve’s client README. | Arm64 Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, according to Valve’s Steamworks documentation. |
| Software target | Linux desktop environment with 64-bit and 32-bit x86 glibc and graphics-driver support. | Product-specific SteamOS environment with compatibility layers for other architectures and operating systems. |
| Documented compatibility paths | README specifies the client’s architecture and library requirements; it does not describe a standard ARM desktop installation path. | Valve names Proton for Windows games, FEX for x86 games, and Lepton for Android games. |
| What the documentation establishes | Published requirements for the general Linux client. | ARM64 support for this documented device and its designed software stack—not a blanket support statement for ARM Linux computers. |
What ARM client reports do—and do not—show
A 2026 report in ValveSoftware’s Steam for Linux issue tracker describes native ARM64 client builds, while explicitly noting that they had not been officially released. The report also describes an illegal-instruction crash on one Armv8.0 CPU with newer builds. This is evidence of builds and a CPU-specific failure report, not a published general ARM support specification or proof that all ARM processors behave the same way.
A 2025 SteamOS issue asks about a public ARM64 SteamOS image, an ARM64 Linux client, and ARM64 game uploads. The inquiry is not a Valve roadmap announcement and provides no confirmed release timeline.
