Valve’s general Steam for Linux client requirements are still x86_64/AMD64, but it is not accurate to say Valve has no ARM support at all: Valve documents an ARM64 SteamOS environment for the specific Steam Frame device. The distinction matters because ARM64 and x86_64 use different processor instruction sets. Games built for one do not automatically run natively on the other; they need a compatible native build or a translation layer, and even then compatibility is not guaranteed.
What Valve’s Linux client requirements say
Valve’s current Steam for Linux Client README specifies the latest Ubuntu or an Ubuntu LTS release, a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 Linux kernel, and an x86_64/AMD64 processor. It also lists 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and 64-bit and 32-bit glibc. The README says glibc 2.31 or newer has been required since August 15, 2025. These are the requirements in the current README; Valve may change them over time.
That requirement describes the general Linux client, not every Steam environment Valve supports. Valve’s separate Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as running Arch-based SteamOS on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip. That device-specific implementation does not establish general support for installing the standard Steam for Linux client on ARM Linux distributions.
Why ARM64 games do not run automatically on x86_64—or vice versa
ARM64 and x86_64/AMD64 are different instruction set architectures: each defines the machine instructions a processor can execute. A program compiled for one architecture does not ordinarily run natively on the other. A game therefore needs a build compiled for the device’s architecture, or a compatibility or translation mechanism that can handle the mismatch.

Valve’s official client requirements state the x86_64 requirement, but do not give one explicit reason for it. The practical engineering issue is that supporting a different processor architecture involves more than changing a Linux setting: the client and the games must be available in forms the processor and operating system can run.
How Steam Frame’s compatibility layers handle different games
Valve describes several distinct components for Steam Frame. They address different software and architecture combinations, rather than offering one universal emulator.

Valve summarizes the expected use case this way: “For most developers that probably means running Windows x86 via Proton and FEX.” This describes the Steam Frame context, not a general promise about Steam on ARM devices.
A native ARM64 game build can avoid translating x86 instructions, but Valve’s cited documentation does not identify which Steam games have ARM64 builds or establish that any particular title will work on a particular ARM device.

What determines whether a Steam game will work
Compatibility is a chain of requirements, not a yes-or-no property of “Steam on ARM.” A game needs to be available to the relevant Steam environment; the operating system and client must support the device; the game must run natively or through a suitable translation layer; and its graphics APIs and other game-specific requirements must work. A compatibility layer can make more combinations possible, but it cannot guarantee that every game will launch, function correctly, or perform well.
Steam Support says Steam Play may allow some Windows-only games to work on Linux and directs users to filter the Store for SteamOS + Linux listings. A listing is useful compatibility information, but it is not a universal guarantee for every device or configuration. If Steam reports “Game is not available on your current platform,” check the game’s current platform availability and the support information for the device you intend to use before assuming an architecture workaround will solve it.

What to check before choosing an ARM device for Steam
- Confirm the device’s supported Steam environment. Do not infer that the standard Steam for Linux client supports an ARM Linux distribution just because Steam Frame uses ARM64 SteamOS.
- Check how the game is built. Determine whether the relevant environment has a native ARM64 version or relies on translating x86 or running a Windows version through Proton.
- Look up the specific game’s current platform support. Use the Steam Store’s SteamOS + Linux filter and the game’s current support information; a general compatibility layer is not proof that a particular title works.
- Consider the full compatibility path. Architecture translation is only one part of the chain; graphics API support and game-specific requirements also matter.
Valve’s documentation does not provide a published count of Steam games that work on ARM or a performance statistic for this setup. Treat compatibility as game- and device-specific rather than assuming that a processor architecture or translation layer alone settles the question.
