These influences can reinforce one another, but none alone sets a person’s ceiling.
Math ability is a mix of skills and knowledge
Mathematics draws on both domain-general cognitive resources and knowledge built through learning. A 2022 review of individual differences in mathematical cognition describes how researchers study these differences to understand both strong performance and persistent difficulty, and to inform assessment and instruction: the review.
Fluid reasoning helps people work through unfamiliar problems, while working memory helps them hold and manipulate information during a calculation or multi-step solution. Math-specific foundations matter too: learners need to recognize symbols and understand the concepts those symbols represent. In a longitudinal study of primary-school students, fluid intelligence, working memory, and mathematical-symbol knowledge predicted math achievement. That finding concerns children in the study; it does not establish a fixed limit for an individual learner.
A 2026 study summarized by Texas A&M University examined relationships between cognitive abilities and math skills across 122 distinct test batteries. Those batteries covered areas including mathematical knowledge, calculation, problem solving, and fluency; 122 is the count of test batteries, not participants. The breadth of skills examined underscores that “good at math” can mean several different things rather than one uniform talent. Texas A&M’s summary of the study.

Why prior knowledge changes how hard math feels
New ideas are easier to learn when students can connect them to concepts they already understand. If foundational knowledge is missing, later material may feel like a string of disconnected rules: a learner may be able to follow one worked example but struggle to recognize when or why to use the same idea elsewhere.
OECD reporting on PISA identifies strategies such as linking new material to prior knowledge and looking for alternative ways to solve a problem among those with the largest associations with mathematics learning outcomes. This is an association, not proof that one strategy works best for every person. It does point to the importance of building connections rather than treating each topic as isolated. How math anxiety can affect performance
Anxiety can make it harder to focus on the problem in front of you. A framework on regulated attention proposes that worry can occupy working-memory resources during problem solving, leaving less capacity available for calculations or reasoning. This is a proposed mechanism, not an explanation that applies identically to every learner. The regulated-attention framework.
In PISA 2022, mathematics anxiety was negatively associated with mathematics performance in every participating education system, as it had been in each PISA cycle since 2003. Across OECD countries, a one-point increase in the anxiety index was associated with an average of 18 fewer mathematics score points after accounting for students’ and schools’ socioeconomic profiles. This is an adjusted association in an international assessment—not evidence that anxiety caused a particular student’s score or a way to predict an individual result. OECD’s PISA 2022 analysis.

The relationship may also run in both directions: difficulty can contribute to anxiety, while anxiety may make some problem-solving situations more difficult. The cited evidence does not establish one causal direction as the explanation for everyone. A 2025 review of math anxiety in children examines individual, interpersonal, and sociocultural contributors, but the available summary does not establish a ranking or effect size for those influences. Findings about children should not automatically be generalized to adults. The 2025 review.
Learning experiences and beliefs are part of the picture
Opportunity to learn, the foundations a student has been taught, and the experiences surrounding math all shape what a person can draw on when solving a problem. A single score or moment of difficulty cannot distinguish among a knowledge gap, an unfamiliar task, limited practice, or anxiety. The evidence supports considering these influences together rather than treating performance as a direct measure of innate potential.

In PISA 2022, 35% of students said they disagreed with the statement, “Some people are just not good at mathematics, no matter how hard they study.” That figure records students’ reported belief; it does not show that a particular mindset causes higher achievement. OECD, PISA 2022 results.

Difficulty with math is not, by itself, evidence that someone lacks the ability to learn it. The research described here identifies several skills and circumstances associated with performance, but it does not show that any one trait determines an individual’s future, provide a clinical diagnosis, or identify one universally effective intervention. It also does not quantify every social or instructional influence. The most useful interpretation is that math performance reflects the interaction of what a learner knows, the cognitive demands of a task, emotional responses, and the learning experiences available to them.
