Linux desktops can run a Wayland session and still support many X11 applications through Xwayland. But that compatibility bridge mainly preserves the ability to run app windows; it does not reproduce every system-wide feature or desktop component associated with a full X11 session. That distinction explains why an older app may open normally while screen capture, global shortcuts, window positioning, or automation behaves differently.
Why X11 apps can run in a Wayland session
X11 applications communicate with an X server using the X11 protocol. A Wayland compositor does not simply implement that entire protocol as part of its own server: doing so would amount to recreating a full X server. Instead, desktops commonly use Xwayland, a real X11 server that runs as a Wayland client.
An X11 app connects to Xwayland as it would to an X server. Xwayland handles the app’s X11 requests, then works with the compositor to display and integrate its windows alongside native Wayland windows. A window-management bridge lets the compositor manage the X11 windows within the desktop. The Wayland project’s X11 Application Support documentation and FAQ describe this approach as a way to run legacy clients beside native Wayland applications.
This matters because replacing an application’s X11 assumptions takes development work, and a Wayland login does not guarantee that every app is running natively on Wayland. Electron’s account of its Wayland support notes that Chrome and Electron applications had continued to use X11 by default in Wayland sessions until newer platform support made direct Wayland operation more available. The app’s version and configuration therefore matter as much as the desktop session.

Why Xwayland does not preserve every X11 feature
Xwayland supports application compatibility, not a complete X11 desktop. An X11 window manager generally cannot be dropped into the usual integrated setup to manage both X11 and native Wayland windows. Other traditional desktop components, such as pagers and panels, may lack a practical bridge to Wayland. The Wayland project’s documentation cautions that compatibility with a native X server is not complete.
There is also a difference between showing a window and allowing an app to control or observe the whole desktop. Wayland gives the compositor responsibility for window placement and focus, and deliberately withholds global screen coordinates from applications. Features such as global shortcuts, screen capture, and input emulation are mediated through compositor protocols and desktop portals rather than being universally available to any app.

That restriction is a security boundary: an app should not automatically be able to inspect other apps, steal focus, or simulate user actions. A compositor or portal can mediate sensitive requests, sometimes with user approval. The exact capabilities depend on the app, toolkit or framework, compositor, portal implementation, and their versions. Native Wayland apps can also use newer display capabilities and avoid the extra compatibility layer where they have been ported.
Which tasks are most likely to expose the difference?
- Ordinary app display: Many legacy X11 apps can open through Xwayland, even when other X11-era behavior is unavailable.
- Screen recording or sharing: Capture depends on supported protocols and portal/compositor behavior, not merely on whether an app window can display.
- Global shortcuts and automation: Apps that listen for system-wide keys, observe pointer positions, or emulate input need suitable Wayland-specific support and permissions.
- Window control: An app cannot assume it can move, resize, or focus windows unilaterally; the compositor owns those decisions.
- Desktop panels or window managers: These are components of the desktop model, not ordinary X11 app windows, and may not be covered by Xwayland’s compatibility bridge.
Electron documents restrictions affecting features such as desktopCapturer and globalShortcut, with support varying substantially by desktop environment and portal version. Fedora’s Wayland features tracker also groups work across desktop and protocol layers; its entries include evolving and historical statuses, so check an individual entry’s date rather than treating the tracker as a blanket promise.

What GNOME and KDE have said about X11 sessions
An X11 login session and the ability to run X11 applications are separate support questions. The following are dated project statements, not guarantees about how every distribution packages a release.
| Project statement | What it said | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| GNOME developer update, 2025-06-08 | Jordan Petridis said the GNOME 49 X11 session would be disabled by default, with removal planned for GNOME 50 subject to the development process at the time. | The update explicitly distinguished the GNOME-on-Xorg login session from Xwayland, which it said was unaffected. See the GNOME update. |
| KDE Plasma Team announcement, 2025-11-26 | The team said Plasma 6.8 would be Wayland-exclusive and the Plasma X11 session would cease to be included. It expected KDE support for that session into early 2027; exact bug-fix timing was undecided in the announcement. | KDE said Xwayland would continue to support most X11 apps, while specialized screenshot and screencasting tools might need adjustment. The statement did not plan to remove X11 support from KDE applications outside Plasma. See the Plasma Team announcement. |
Both statements are tied to their publication dates and project plans. For a specific computer, check the desktop release and distribution packaging in use rather than assuming that a project announcement applies identically to every installation.

How to diagnose an app or feature that fails
- Identify how the app is running. Find out whether it is a native Wayland client or an X11 client running through Xwayland. A Wayland login alone does not answer this.
- Name the operation that fails. Separate a window that will not open from a global shortcut that does not fire, a capture that is unavailable, a window that cannot be repositioned, or an automation tool that cannot observe or emulate input.
- Check the relevant software stack. Note the app and framework version, desktop/compositor, and installed portal implementation and version. For Electron apps, check the app’s own Wayland support and configuration.
- Choose the appropriate compatibility target. For ordinary X11 app windows, Xwayland is commonly sufficient. A feature requiring system-wide access or an X11-specific desktop component may need app updates, compositor/portal support, or—where the distribution still provides it—a full X11 session.
There is no universal list of apps that fail under Wayland: compatibility depends on what each app does and on the versions and components in the session. A useful comparison considers whether the need is one legacy app or a whole X11 desktop component, whether the task is rendering or global control, and whether preserving legacy behavior or gaining compositor-mediated isolation matters more.
