When solder won’t stick, first identify where it beads up: on the iron tip, on the wire or terminal, or on the circuit-board pad. Those symptoms point to different causes. In electronics hand soldering, “sticking” means wetting: molten solder spreads across a suitable metal surface instead of forming a ball. Clean, solderable surfaces, appropriate flux and enough heat at the workpiece are all needed for a sound joint.

Where is the solder failing to wet?

Use the location of the bead as your first diagnostic check. A tip that repels solder often needs cleaning or replacement; solder that wets the tip but not the joint often indicates inadequate heat transfer or a problem with the work surface.

  • It beads on the iron tip: suspect oxidation on the tip.
  • It wets the tip but beads on the joint: check whether the work itself is hot enough, clean and solderable.
  • It spreads, then pulls into separate mounds: consider dewetting, which differs from initial nonwetting.
  • The finished joint looks dull or grainy: appearance alone does not establish whether it is defective.

How to fix solder that will not stick to the iron tip

A darkened tip that repels solder may be oxidized. HAKKO describes solder forming a sphere rather than wetting the tip in this situation and recommends cleaning, re-tinning and protecting the tip. Its cleaning-wire procedure sets the tip to 250°C; that is HAKKO’s procedure setting, not a universal working temperature for every iron or soldering task. See HAKKO’s tip-wetting troubleshooting instructions.

  1. Wipe the hot tip on brass cleaning wire or the iron maker’s recommended cleaner.
  2. Feed fresh flux-cored solder to the cleaned tip, then wipe and repeat until solder wets it.
  3. Leave the tip covered with solder when parking the iron or finishing work.
  4. If approved cleaning does not restore wetting, replace the tip.

Avoid aggressive abrasion on plated tips unless the manufacturer permits it; damaging the plating can shorten tip life. Switch off an idle iron and avoid an unnecessarily high setting to limit oxidation.

Why solder sticks to the tip but not the joint

The solder and tip may be hot while the pad, wire or terminal remains too cool. Heat the joint surfaces with the tip, then feed solder to the heated work so it melts there. Melting solder on the iron and transferring a blob to a cold surface does not ensure a sound joint: the work surfaces themselves must reach the temperature needed for the joint to form. IPC’s hand-soldering paper explains that insufficient heat can cause poor wetting and that molten solder on copper will not make a joint unless the copper receives enough heat. Read IPC’s hand-soldering technical paper.

Improve heat transfer before increasing temperature

  • Use a clean tip with enough contact area for the work.
  • If a ground plane, heavy wire or large terminal draws heat away, choose an iron and tip suited to that thermal load while observing the component and process limits.
  • Keep contact time controlled. Excessive temperature or leaving the iron on too long can damage boards or components, and burned flux can contaminate the joint and interfere with wetting.

Why solder beads on a pad, wire or terminal

Check for oxidation, dirt, oil, old burned flux, protective coatings or a surface that is not compatible with the solder and flux. Clean the work appropriately, apply flux intended for the material and task, and heat the work surface. The flux must be suitable for the process; IPC notes that there is a minimum activation temperature below which flux will not properly remove metal oxides.

Formulation for electronic soldering applications. It is effective in removing oxides from Tin-Lead, Lead-free, Gold, Silver and Copper alloys.
  • ✔️ENOUGHT QUANTITY: The package includes 1 High Quality Dropper of soldering liquid flux, 30 ml net Volume. Excellent Immersion, wettability, chemical and technical properties. Thus, Enough quantity for your use. Strong soldering and welding power resulting strong low residual joints
  • ✔️NON-CORROSIVE: Formulation with neutral pH, no corrosion involve after soldering process. Rosin is not conductive in dry conditions and has good insulation. Is not corrosive to metal surfaces such as circuit boards
  • ✔️OXIDATION RESISTANCE: Anti-oxidation effect through soldering , desoldering, rework and reflow electronic processes for their high boiling formulation components. Giving as a result smooth, shiny and uniform soldering joints.
  • ✔️NON TOXIC: Organic High Purity formulation, stable performance and low volatility for long use cycles, no irritant smell, Lead-free, Zinc Chloride-free and Ammonium Chloride-free.

Do not begin by scraping a PCB trace or grinding a pad. If copper is missing, the pad is covered by solder mask, or the pad has detached from the board, adding heat and solder cannot restore the original metal surface. That is a board-repair issue, not simply a wetting problem.

What if solder wets and then pulls into mounds?

This can be dewetting rather than initial nonwetting. IPC-9111 lists nonwetting and dewetting as separate troubleshooting categories. Inspect for contamination, oxidation, damage or soldering materials unsuitable for the surface rather than repeatedly adding solder. The available IPC-9111 contents establish the distinction as a failure category; they do not provide the full standard’s corrective procedures.

Does a dull or grainy joint mean it is bad?

Not by itself. Alloy and soldering conditions affect appearance, so “shiny versus dull” is not a reliable standalone diagnosis. A joint moved while cooling or one that did not receive enough heat may be defective, but inspect whether solder actually wetted the surfaces and whether the electrical connection is sound. For a suspect joint, let it cool without movement; rework it only with suitable equipment and skill. IPC treats cold joints, disturbed joints and overheating or contamination as distinct defect categories in its hand-soldering guidance and IPC-9111 contents.

Why turning the iron hotter is not always the fix

A higher setting may help when the work is not reaching the necessary process temperature, but indiscriminate increases can accelerate tip oxidation, burn flux and damage boards or components. Temperature depends on the iron, tip, solder alloy and workpiece; there is no universal setting established here. Follow the solder and iron manufacturers’ guidance, ensure the tip is clean, and improve heat transfer before raising the setting. HAKKO recommends avoiding unnecessarily high settings to prevent tip oxidation, while IPC warns that excessive heat and contact time can cause thermal damage and burned-flux contamination.

Choose soldering materials for the job

These recommendations concern electronics hand soldering. Plumbing, stained glass, aluminum and other specialty materials may require different solder, flux, tools and procedures; electronics advice does not automatically apply. Choose solder and flux intended for the specific material and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
