For many flexible pressure sensors built with nanoscale materials or features, a softer compressible layer deforms more under a small load, often producing a stronger initial electrical response. But that layer may run out of room to compress, lose further contact-area change, or suffer damage as pressure rises. A stiffer or mechanically supported design can preserve a broader operating range, sometimes at the cost of low-pressure sensitivity. This is a design trade-off, not a universal rule: geometry, prestress, sensing mechanism and readout electronics all affect the result.
“Nanosensor” also needs qualification. The studies discussed here concern flexible pressure sensors with micro- or nanostructured features; that does not mean every complete device is nanoscale. Their results show how structural mechanics can help balance sensitivity and range, but they are not directly comparable specifications because the studies use different devices and measurement definitions.
What does stiffness change in a pressure sensor?
In a compressible tactile sensor, pressure deforms the sensing layer or its contact structures. That deformation changes a measurable electrical property—for example, resistance, current or capacitance. If a structure deforms readily under a small pressure, the electrical output can change quickly at the low end of the pressure scale. This is why reducing effective stiffness can increase initial sensitivity in many designs.

Effective stiffness is not just the stiffness of the material named in a device description. It depends on the complete structure: material properties, layer thickness, pore size and arrangement, supporting features, contact geometry and any preload or prestress. Changing the shape or spacing of a structure can therefore alter its mechanical response even when the base material is unchanged.

Greater compliance has a cost. Once a layer is substantially compressed, additional pressure may cause relatively little new deformation. Contact area may stop increasing appreciably, the electrical response may flatten, or the structure may be damaged. A more robust structure may tolerate pressure over a wider span but show less output change per unit pressure at low loads. The 2026 review discusses this sensitivity-versus-range trade-off and saturation or damage under elevated loads, including pressures above 10 kPa; 10 kPa is an example in that review, not a universal failure threshold. The review is indexed by PubMed.
It is useful to think of stiffness as one design variable among several, not as a dial with a single predictable effect. A soft layer can be paired with a supporting or graded structure, for example, to manage how deformation progresses as pressure increases. And in some devices, a change in mechanical regime—not simply “softer” or “stiffer”—governs the response.
What is the difference between sensitivity, response range and linear range?
These terms describe different properties. A sensitivity figure gives the slope of an output-versus-pressure curve over a stated interval; a response range identifies where a measurable response is reported; and a linear range identifies where the calibration is approximately linear.
- Pressure sensitivity is a change in a specified output per unit pressure, over a stated pressure interval. A study might report a normalized resistance change per kilopascal, for example. The output definition, units and interval matter: a maximum sensitivity is not necessarily maintained across the full operating range.
- Detection or response range is the pressure interval over which the study reports a measurable device response. It does not, on its own, establish linearity, resolution, accuracy under preload or survival beyond the reported conditions.
- Linear range is the interval over which the stated calibration behaves approximately linearly. It is especially relevant when an application needs a simple conversion from electrical output to pressure.
Do not confuse pressure sensitivity with a strain-based gauge factor. They are defined against different inputs, and their numerical values are not interchangeable. A high sensitivity figure also does not establish that a sensor can resolve small pressure changes while carrying a large steady load; that depends on the device and its measurement conditions. A structural-design review discusses these distinctions and the importance of specifying the output and interval. Read the review on structural design and sensing definitions.

For example, a reported maximum sensitivity over the first part of a sensor’s range can coexist with a much broader response range. The sensor may still respond at higher pressures, but with a different slope. Conversely, a broad range does not prove that the output remains linear throughout it. When reading a paper or datasheet, look for both the pressure interval attached to the sensitivity and the separate range or linearity claim.
How have sensor structures balanced sensitivity and range?
Published experiments illustrate several structural approaches: adjusting porosity, regulating stiffness, grading contact geometry and interlacing microstructures. Their figures belong to the particular devices and methods reported by the authors; they should not be treated as a standardized contest.
| Structure and study | Reported sensitivity | Reported pressure interval | What the result shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two porous PDMS layers with adjusted pore sizes and thickness ratio; Yin and coauthors, Micromachines, 2025 | Maximum 0.063 kPa⁻¹ over 0–23.6 kPa | Reported response range: 0–654 kPa | The peak sensitivity interval is much narrower than the full reported response range. |
| Pyramidal carbon-foam array with an elastomer spacer as a stiffness regulator; study authors, 2023 | 24.6 kPa⁻¹ | Reported linear range: 1.4 MPa | The authors attribute the result to interacting nonlinear piezoresistivity and nonlinear elasticity in that architecture. |
| Daisy-inspired gradient hemispherical iontronic structure; Jin and coauthors, Advanced Functional Materials, 2026 | 1,864 kPa⁻¹ over 0–61 kPa; greater than 122 kPa⁻¹ over 0–2,555 kPa | Reported intervals are shown with the corresponding sensitivities | The distinct low-pressure and broad-range figures demonstrate why sensitivity must be tied to its interval. |
| Interlaced microdomes designed to exploit strain effects; Li and coauthors, Advanced Materials, 2024 | 5.22–70 MPa⁻¹ | 45 Pa–4.1 MPa | The authors report a broad pressure range; the sensitivity is expressed in MPa⁻¹, not kPa⁻¹. |
The ranges and sensitivity figures in this table are published authors’ measurements, not independently replicated product specifications. Differences in output normalization, pressure interval, preload and linearity make direct ranking misleading. In particular, the carbon-foam study’s 1.4 MPa figure is a claimed linear range, while the Yin study distinguishes a maximum-sensitivity interval from a broader pressure-response range. Yin and coauthors’ study, the carbon-foam and spacer study, Jin and coauthors’ study and Li and coauthors’ study report the respective results.

Porosity can shape how deformation accumulates
Yin and coauthors adjusted both pore sizes and the thickness ratio of two porous PDMS layers. Their 2025 paper reports a maximum sensitivity of 0.063 kPa⁻¹ over 0–23.6 kPa and a response range of 0–654 kPa. Those figures describe different parts of the response: the peak sensitivity should not be read as a constant slope across all 654 kPa. The authors also report a 128 ms response and more than 10,000 fatigue cycles under their tests; those are study-specific measurements, not guarantees for other devices.

The authors note that “a single-sized pore structure struggles to achieve both high sensitivity and a broad sensing range simultaneously.” The point is not that one pore arrangement is always best, but that the deformation profile of a porous layer is part of the design problem. A structure that is highly compliant early in its compression may need additional features to preserve useful response at higher pressure.
Stiffness regulation can extend a linear interval
The 2023 carbon-foam study combined a pyramidal sensing array with an elastomer spacer that acts as a stiffness regulator. The study authors report 24.6 kPa⁻¹ sensitivity and a 1.4 MPa linear range, attributing the combination to interacting nonlinear piezoresistivity and nonlinear elasticity. This is evidence for a particular architecture, not a general material constant or proof that inserting any spacer will produce the same result.
Graded and interlaced contacts offer other routes
Jin and coauthors’ 2026 daisy-inspired gradient hemispherical iontronic structure reports 1,864 kPa⁻¹ over 0–61 kPa and sensitivity greater than 122 kPa⁻¹ over 0–2,555 kPa. It also reports a 7.6 Pa detection limit. The separate low-pressure and broad-range figures are important: they do not mean that the sensor maintains the higher sensitivity over the entire broad interval. The authors also identify the challenge of resolving pressure under large preloads and caution that evaluating only part of a nominal operating range makes performance claims harder to assess.

Its reported pressure range is 45 Pa–4.1 MPa, with sensitivity expressed as 5.22–70 MPa⁻¹. Preserve those units when interpreting the result: an MPa⁻¹ value cannot be compared as if it were the same unqualified number in kPa⁻¹. The structure is another example of using geometry to shape response, not evidence that microdomes will suit every pressure-sensing task.

Does a stiffer diaphragm always increase the measurement range?
No. A mechanically stronger or stiffer structure can resist compression and may tolerate larger loads, but stiffness alone does not determine the usable range. The geometry, support, prestress, material behavior, sensing mechanism, allowable pressure difference and readout all matter. Nor does a wider response range necessarily mean a wider linear range.
A tensioned resonant membrane illustrates why the simple soft-versus-stiff explanation has limits. A membrane study identifies both flexural-rigidity-dominated and tension-dominated regimes, with pressure sensitivity depending on the regime and an upper limit set by tolerable pressure difference. This is a different mechanical situation from a porous tactile layer whose contact area changes as it compresses. The membrane study is available through ScienceDirect.
Finished-device electronics can also affect reported usable range. Tekscan says the drive voltage and feedback resistor used with its FlexiForce A201 can alter its dynamic range. That is a force sensor and an electronics example, not a direct experimental equivalent of the pressure nanosensors above. Its force readings should not be compared numerically with a pressure range unless the load area and test setup are established: pressure depends on force distributed over area.
How should you choose a sensor for a pressure measurement?
Start with the pressure profile the device must actually measure, not the largest sensitivity number in an abstract. A useful selection separates low-load detection, high-load survival and calibration needs, then checks the mechanical and electronic conditions under which the published performance was obtained.

- Set the low end of interest. Identify the smallest pressure change that must be distinguished and whether the sensor will carry a steady preload. A detection limit alone does not show resolution under that preload.
- Set the high end of operation. Establish the greatest pressure the device must measure, plus whether brief overloads matter. Do not infer an overload rating from a paper’s response range unless it reports survivability under those conditions.
- Specify the calibration interval. If the application needs a simple linear conversion, require a stated linear range that covers the operating pressures. A broad response range is not a substitute.
- Check the sensitivity definition. Record the output quantity, units, pressure interval and whether the figure is a maximum or interval-wide value. Compare devices only when those conditions are sufficiently alike.
- Account for mounting and preload. Contact shape, supports, prestress and the applied load can change effective stiffness and response. Ask whether the reported results include a preload comparable to the intended installation.
- Check repeatability and hysteresis. A sensor that gives a large output change may still be unsuitable if loading and unloading produce different calibration behavior, or if response drifts with repeated cycles. Seek study-specific repeatability, hysteresis and fatigue information for the intended conditions.
- Include the readout circuit. Drive voltage, feedback resistance and other circuit choices can affect the usable output range. Treat the sensor and its readout as a measurement system rather than assuming the mechanical layer alone fixes performance.
These checks help distinguish a sensor optimized to resolve tiny changes from one intended to cover a broad pressure span. If both are required, look for a device whose authors explicitly report both low-pressure sensitivity and high-pressure behavior under relevant calibration and preload conditions, rather than inferring the balance from stiffness alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I compare two sensor sensitivity values if both are given in kPa⁻¹?
Not safely from units alone. Confirm that both papers define the normalized electrical output the same way, report the same kind of slope, and use comparable pressure intervals and preload conditions; otherwise the shared unit can conceal different measurements.
Does a 7.6 Pa detection limit mean a sensor can measure every pressure accurately above 7.6 Pa?
No. A detection limit indicates a reported ability to detect a small input under the study’s conditions; it does not by itself establish accuracy, resolution across the full range, or performance with a large steady preload.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why can a sensor still respond at high pressure after its sensitivity falls?
Response can remain measurable even when each additional unit of pressure produces a smaller output change. In other words, the output-versus-pressure curve may continue while its slope declines, which is why response range and sensitivity interval should be reported separately.
Can a commercial force sensor’s force range be converted directly to kPa?
Only if the effective loaded area and how force is distributed over it are known for the measurement setup. Without that information, a force rating in newtons is not a pressure specification.
