A swollen phone battery is a warning sign, not a cosmetic problem. Stop using and charging the phone, do not press the bulge or open the device, and contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider. Heat, physical damage, battery degradation and some charging or storage conditions may contribute, but appearance alone cannot reveal the cause.
Why do smartphone batteries swell up?
Swelling signals a problem with a battery; it is not a normal change to ignore. Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and performance as they age. Repeated charging and discharging can contribute to degradation, and a battery may swell under some conditions. That does not mean age alone inevitably makes every battery swell, or that the bulge tells you exactly what went wrong.
Several factors may contribute:
- Heat: Hot environments, including a parked car or direct sunlight, can stress a battery. Avoid charging in hot conditions.
- Physical damage: A drop, crush, bend or other impact can damage a device internally. Avoid using a phone with signs of damage.
- Aging and use: Battery capacity declines over time. Some charging and storage patterns may also contribute to degradation; their effects vary by device and conditions.
- Charging or storage conditions: Japanese carrier NTT DOCOMO lists charging while using a device, high-temperature charging or storage, prolonged storage near full or empty, and repeated shallow charge/discharge cycles among possible contributors. Follow your phone maker’s model-specific guidance rather than treating any one pattern as a definitive cause.
Official guidance does not establish a single cause for an individual swollen battery or quantify how much each factor contributes. Treat swelling itself as the reason to stop using the phone and get help, rather than trying to diagnose the chemistry from the appearance.
What should I do if my phone battery is swollen?
- Stop using and charging the phone. Do not keep it powered on to see whether the swelling worsens. Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office advises stopping use when an abnormality is detected and seeking assistance; Health Canada says not to use swollen batteries. Singapore consumer battery safety guidance and Health Canada battery safety advice provide the relevant instructions.
- Do not press, flatten or force the phone shut. Do not puncture the battery, pry the phone open or try to remove its back cover. DOCOMO specifically warns against pressing a swollen device or attempting to remove its cover. DOCOMO’s battery guidance explains this caution.
- Contact the phone maker or a qualified repair provider. Ask how to arrange repair, replacement and safe handoff. Singapore’s guidance points consumers to an authorized service provider. - Keep away if there is smoke, leakage, unusual heat or fire. Do not attempt a DIY repair. Follow local emergency guidance and the instructions of emergency responders.
- Use the local battery collection route. Do not put a swollen phone or battery in household rubbish or an ordinary recycling bin. Australia’s ACCC says damaged lithium-ion products should not go in rubbish, recycling bins or hard-waste collections; disposal routes differ by location, so ask the repair provider or local authority how to hand it over safely. Can I charge a phone with a swollen battery?
No. Stop charging a phone suspected of having a damaged or swollen battery. Do not leave it plugged in while you arrange service; ask the manufacturer or repair provider how to handle and transport it.

Can I replace a swollen phone battery myself?
Do not open a phone while its battery is swollen. Have the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider assess it and advise on replacement. Any replacement part and procedure must match the exact phone model. Apple warns that an incorrect battery for an iPhone model can cause fit, performance and safety problems, and says trained technicians or professional repair providers are the safest, most reliable option for most customers. Repair availability, genuine-part access, warranty terms and costs vary by model, country and provider.
How can I reduce the risk of battery problems?
These steps reduce avoidable stress; they cannot guarantee that a battery will never swell.

- Keep the phone out of direct sun and hot cars, and avoid charging it in hot conditions.
- Charge on a hard, ventilated surface where you can keep an eye on the device. Do not charge under bedding, on a couch or under other soft material that can trap heat.
- Protect the phone from drops, crushing, bending and other physical damage.
- Pay attention to bulging, leakage, unusual odor or excessive heat. If an abnormality appears, stop using the phone and seek service rather than waiting.
Do not rely on a universal charge percentage or a third-party “battery saver” product as a swelling cure. Phone makers implement battery-management features differently; use the guidance for your model.
