Stop pasting raw production credentials, customer data, or sensitive source code into unapproved developer tools. Use an approved service, reduce the issue to a small sanitized example, and keep live credentials in a controlled secret store. A prompt may share more than the text you paste: some coding tools can also collect open files, project structure, or terminal context. If a live credential has already been exposed, rotate and revoke it; deleting the message is not a substitute.
Why is pasting a whole log or config file a risk?
It feels efficient: a full error log or configuration file gives a coding assistant more context than a carefully reduced example. But the same material can contain API keys, access tokens, customer identifiers, private paths, internal hostnames, or proprietary code. Sending that material to a third-party service transfers it beyond the project boundary, and the exact handling depends on the tool, plan, settings, and applicable organization rules. OWASP warns that prompts can disclose pasted code, credentials, architecture details, and customer data to third-party services; Defra’s developer standard likewise tells staff not to place secrets, credentials, keys, or personal data in prompts (OWASP DevSecOps guidance; OWASP Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet).
This is a precautionary workflow, not a claim that every tool trains on every prompt or that every paste causes a breach. The important point is that once sensitive material leaves your controlled environment, you need to know who receives it, what the service does with it, and what your organization permits. If those answers are unclear, do not send the raw material.
Can a developer tool see more than I paste?
Yes. Depending on the product and its settings, an IDE assistant may gather context from open files, nearby code, workspace structure, or terminal output. An agent may also read files, run commands, call connected tools, and use the privileges available to the developer account. OWASP recommends excluding sensitive files from model context and treating agent permissions, approvals, and sandboxing as security controls, not conveniences (OWASP guidance; OWASP IDE and AI-assisted development guidance).

That makes the clipboard only one disclosure path. A local tool with broad workspace access may index or transmit files such as .env files, configuration, and logs unless its scope is restricted. A .gitignore rule controls what Git tracks; it does not generally prevent a program with filesystem access from reading a file. Do not assume that a repository ignore rule is also an AI-context exclusion. Check the specific tool’s documentation and settings, and verify what its current mode can access (Microsoft DevSecOps DLP guidance).
Agents raise the stakes because they may act with developer privileges rather than merely suggest code. OWASP recommends approvals for consequential actions, sandboxing, and short-lived, scoped credentials. Security researcher Michael Stepankin documented prompt-injection scenarios involving local tokens and confidential files; his report says the vulnerabilities were addressed with the VS Code team. Those historic cases are a reason to evaluate permissions and safeguards, not evidence that the reported flaws remain unpatched (OWASP guidance).
Does opting out of model training make a prompt private?
No. An opt-out from model improvement is not the same as a promise that submitted content is never processed, retained, or made accessible under the service’s terms. Privacy and data handling vary by provider, plan, setting, region, and tool mode, so avoid blanket claims about all coding assistants. Verify the current terms for the exact product and account you use.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
One concrete example shows why plan matters: GitHub announced on March 25, 2026 that, beginning April 24, 2026, interaction data from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ would be used for model improvement unless users opted out. The announcement excluded Business and Enterprise from that update. That policy is specific to those plans and that announcement; it should not be generalized to other providers, nor should its opt-out be read as a guarantee of zero processing (GitHub’s policy announcement).

For a team, compare the controls that actually govern your case: which data categories are approved; whether the tool receives only selected text or automatically gathered context; training and retention terms for the specific plan; workspace exclusions; agent and network permissions; and what incident-response options exist. Enterprise-managed or self-hosted deployments may offer useful control options, but self-hosting alone does not eliminate risk if permissions, logging, or access to sensitive files remain too broad.
What is a safer way to ask for debugging help?
Use the smallest sanitized example that can reproduce the problem. Before sending it, classify the material, check the applicable policy, inspect the entire prompt and attachment, and make sure the tool has only the access it needs.
- Classify the material. Treat live keys, private keys, tokens, customer records, and sensitive source code as restricted unless your organization explicitly approves the destination and handling. Check your employer’s rules before using a personal account or an unfamiliar service.
- Reduce the reproduction. Keep the error message and the smallest relevant code path. Remove unrelated log lines, configuration, and customer records. If a detail is not needed to explain the failure, leave it out.
- Replace sensitive values. Substitute clearly fictional placeholders for credentials, names, identifiers, and other sensitive values. Do not merely mask the first few characters of a real token or retain real customer fields in an example. Redaction and minimization are practical applications of OWASP’s guidance, not a guarantee that automated sanitization has caught everything.
- Inspect the whole submission. Review the prompt, code block, stack trace, attached files, and any context the tool will gather. Look for secrets, personal data, internal paths, and confidential details that may have been overlooked when copying a large block.
- Choose and scope the tool. Use a service approved for the data category. Review its plan-specific data terms and context-exclusion controls. Limit workspace access, network access, agent actions, and credentials to what the task requires; require approval for consequential operations.
- Keep credentials out of source context. Use an appropriate secret manager or encrypted store for live credentials. An environment file may be a convenient local configuration mechanism, but a token in
.envis still readable by software that can access that file. Adding it to.gitignoredoes not make it invisible to an IDE assistant or agent. - Use repository controls as a second layer. Enable supported secret scanning and push protection where appropriate, and validate which repositories, secret patterns, and workflows are covered. These controls help with repository exposure; they do not prevent a person from pasting a secret into an external prompt.
Microsoft’s DLP guidance emphasizes that coverage differs across devices, browsers, operating systems, and applications. A control that blocks one upload path may not apply in every IDE or browser. Teams should confirm enforcement in the actual developer workflow rather than assuming a single DLP rule protects every prompt (Microsoft guidance).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Act as though a live credential may have been disclosed. Follow the issuer’s procedure and your organization’s incident process; for an active key or token, generate a replacement, update systems that depend on it, and revoke or delete the exposed credential. GitHub’s credential guidance describes that sequence, and its secret-scanning documentation advises immediate rotation when an alert identifies a secret (GitHub credential security; GitHub secret scanning).

Account for applications, build jobs, deployments, and other automations that may still rely on the old value. Confirm that the replacement works before removing the old credential, then revoke the compromised one as soon as the dependent systems have been updated. If the token grants broad access, involve the responsible security or platform team promptly. Deleting a chat entry may reduce what is visible in that interface, but it does not revoke the credential or establish that copies no longer exist.
If the material was customer data or proprietary code rather than a credential, do not assume the same rotation steps solve the problem. Escalate through your organization’s security, privacy, or incident-response process so the team can assess the content and applicable obligations. Avoid trying to resolve a potentially reportable disclosure by quietly deleting a message.
What do repository leak statistics tell us—and what don’t they?
Repository protections are important, but their metrics should not be mistaken for measurements of prompt leakage. In an October 2026 analysis, GitHub reported that the number of screened pushes was 2.84 times its Q2 2024 level by Q2 2026, while pushes carrying credentials were 2.59 times the Q2 2024 level. GitHub said it found no statistically detectable trend in the share of pushes containing credentials across the nine-quarter analysis. These are GitHub push-path measures, not counts of secrets pasted into AI tools (GitHub’s analysis).
In the same period, GitHub reported that the share of push-path blocks overridden fell from 6.63% to 3.93%. That is a change in its measured override share, not a general measure of developer behavior across all tools. GitHub secret scanning and push protection can identify or block supported secret patterns in covered repository workflows, but they cannot reliably catch every kind of secret or stop a separate external prompt submission. GitHub documents pattern and coverage limitations in its secret-security guidance (GitHub secret scanning).

A 2024 study by Yue Liu, Chakkrit Tantithamthavorn, and Li Li flagged 2,325 of 27,261 VS Code extensions—8.5%—for credential-related data-exposure risk. The study concerns exposure pathways among extensions examined. It does not show that 8.5% of prompts leaked credentials or that every flagged extension actually exposed data (the study’s paper). The useful lesson is to assess the capabilities and permissions of individual extensions, not to turn a bounded study into a universal leakage rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should a team set a practical rule?
A useful rule is categorical rather than dependent on whether a developer remembers to be careful: no raw production secrets, private keys, customer personal data, or restricted source material in an unapproved tool. Then document which tools and plans are approved for which data categories, how automatic context access is restricted, and who can approve an exception.
Pair the rule with technical defaults. Exclude sensitive files from assistant context where supported; scope agent access to a workspace and limited actions; use short-lived credentials with only the required permissions; and require confirmation before external network calls or consequential changes. Do not rely on a Git ignore file to enforce AI-tool boundaries. Provide developers with a way to create sanitized reproductions and a clear escalation route for accidental disclosures.
Finally, make the controls measurable in the workflow: verify DLP coverage for the IDEs, browsers, and operating systems actually in use; check that repository scanning covers relevant patterns; and review whether developers can identify the approved plan and its terms. These controls address different paths. No single setting substitutes for minimizing what is shared in the first place.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paste a fake API key or synthetic customer record into a coding assistant?
Synthetic examples are safer when the values are genuinely fictional and do not reproduce real tokens, customer identifiers, or confidential data. Keep the example structurally useful, but review it for details copied from production that could still identify a person, system, or organization.
Should I report an accidental paste even after rotating the credential?
Yes, follow your organization’s incident process. Rotation limits the credential’s future usefulness, while the security team may still need to determine what data was exposed, whether dependent systems were affected, and whether additional response is required.
How can I tell whether an IDE assistant has access to my workspace?
Check the product’s documentation and settings for workspace indexing, context inclusion, file exclusions, terminal access, and agent/tool permissions. Confirm behavior for the specific mode you use; an exclusion or DLP rule in one application does not establish coverage in every IDE or browser.
Does secret scanning detect every kind of credential?
No. Secret-scanning tools cover supported patterns and workflows, and repository protection does not inspect every external prompt. Treat scanning as a backstop rather than permission to paste credentials into a developer tool.
