Samsung’s side-mounted fingerprint sensor can be easier to find and use by touch than an under-display reader, but the available evidence does not show that it is universally faster or more reliable. The practical advantage is its location at a physical button; whether that feels better depends on the phone, your grip and your hands.
Is a side fingerprint sensor better than an under-display fingerprint sensor?
It can be better for a particular person and use case, especially if they prefer locating the reader without looking at the screen. It is not an established across-the-board win. Samsung sells phones with both designs, and its specifications describe where and how particular sensors work—not controlled head-to-head results.
For example, Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Flip7’s reader on the side and describes it as capacitive, while the Galaxy S25 series has an ultrasonic sensor on the screen. These are different combinations of placement and technology, not evidence that one consistently unlocks faster, succeeds more often or is more secure.
What makes a side-mounted reader appealing?
It is attached to a physical button
A reader built into a side button is in a fixed, tactile location. You may be able to find it with your finger without first looking for an illuminated sensor on the display. The Galaxy Z Flip7 is one current Samsung example; Samsung also described the Galaxy S10e’s scanner as located on its power button in its 2019 announcement.

Its comfort depends on how you hold the phone
A side button may be convenient when your finger naturally rests near it, but less so if the phone’s size, your grip, or which hand you use makes reaching it awkward. Button placement and phone design matter, so the experience with one Samsung model does not establish how every side-mounted reader will feel.
How under-display readers differ
An under-display sensor sits beneath the screen, so unlocking involves placing a finger on the designated area of the display. Samsung identifies the Galaxy S25 series’ on-screen reader as ultrasonic. That is a technology and location specification; it does not, by itself, establish how the reader compares with the Z Flip7’s capacitive side sensor in daily use.

Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy S10 announcement said its ultrasonic sensor read the “3D contours” of a thumbprint for improved anti-spoofing. That is Samsung’s product claim about that device, not independent proof that ultrasonic readers are more secure than side-mounted readers—or a comparative security assessment of current phones. Screen protectors can affect an under-display reader
Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance says screen protectors can interfere with fingerprint recognition on in-display sensors. It warns that some thick or glass protectors may cause problems. Fit and compatibility therefore matter when comparing everyday use: a reader that works well without a protector may behave differently with a particular protector installed. Check guidance for the exact phone and use a protector specified as compatible with its fingerprint reader. Samsung’s fingerprint-recognition troubleshooting guidance.

Samsung also reported a specific issue in 2019 involving certain silicone screen-protector patterns that ultrasonic sensors recognized as fingerprints. This is historical and specific to the issue Samsung described; it does not establish that all current ultrasonic readers or screen protectors have the same vulnerability. Samsung’s 2019 statement.
What can interfere with either style?
Samsung’s support guidance identifies factors such as contamination, moisture and finger condition as possible causes of recognition trouble. Those are practical variables to account for before blaming sensor placement. A clean, dry finger and a clean sensor or screen make a more useful starting point for assessing a phone’s everyday behavior.

Samsung’s support pages separate phones with under-display readers from those with side or power-button scanners. Because model coverage can vary by region and support lists change, confirm the location for the exact model and market rather than relying on a general model-family assumption. - Verify each phone’s sensor. Check the exact model’s specifications and Samsung support information for location and sensor type.
- Keep the setup consistent. Use the same hand, grip and phone state for each device. Note whether a screen protector is installed and what type it is.
- Try realistic conditions. Compare clean, dry fingers first, then separately note any everyday conditions you can responsibly reproduce, such as damp fingers.
- Record outcomes rather than relying on memory. If you claim a success rate or unlock-time advantage, state the number of attempts, timing method and conditions. Samsung’s published materials cited here do not provide a controlled comparison or performance figures.
- Judge access as well as recognition. Note whether you can find the sensor comfortably and consistently with your usual grip; this is a personal usability judgment, not a universal performance result.
Which design should you choose?
Choose based on the actual phone in your hand. A side-mounted button is a sensible preference if you like its tactile location and can reach it naturally. An under-display reader may suit you better if its position works with your grip and you want the sensor integrated into the screen. For either design, model-specific placement, protector compatibility and your own finger and grip conditions matter more than a blanket claim that one technology always wins.
