Sam Altman did not introduce himself as Silicon Valley’s Prometheus. In a Vanity Fair interview published October 5, 2026, interviewer Mark Guiducci offered the comparison while asking what role Altman hoped to play in AI history. Altman said it was “closer to that than other things you could come up with,” then described his aim as making AI a technology that empowers everyone.

Where the Prometheus comparison came from

In Mark Guiducci’s Vanity Fair interview, the question was about Altman’s hoped-for place in AI history. Altman resisted the idea that he should be the “main character,” saying he would prefer the history books not write about him at all. He said the work OpenAI did would matter more if it ensured that “every person got hugely empowered with” AI.

Guiducci then offered a one-word analogy: “Prometheus.” Altman replied, “Closer to that than other things you could come up with for sure.” The exchange is the basis for Gizmodo’s headline, “Sam Altman Thinks He’s the Prometheus of Silicon Valley.” It is a pointed interpretation of the interview, not a literal self-description: the interviewer supplied the analogy, and Altman accepted it as a comparatively apt one.

The Prometheus reference evokes the mythological figure who brought fire to humanity. Altman’s comparison rests on his view of AI as a transformative technology—like fire or electricity—and on his stated desire to make its benefits broadly available. His remarks describe his own goals and beliefs, not proof that AI has already delivered those benefits.

What Altman says broad access should mean

Altman said he wants OpenAI’s work to make AI a fundamental technology that leaves every person “hugely empowered.” He argued that putting the technology in everyone’s hands would do “tremendously more good than bad.” These are his expectations about the effects of access, not measured outcomes or an independently verified forecast.

He contrasted that aim with a view he said he had encountered among some Bay Area thinkers: that a small “priesthood” should control access to AI and decide how other people use it. Altman characterized that approach as rule by “benevolent dictators.” Those terms are his description of the position, not evidence that all or most AI researchers or policymakers share it.

The disagreement is about more than whether a model is available. It concerns who gets to use powerful systems, who sets the rules for that use, and who bears the consequences when access enables harm. Altman’s preferred direction is broad distribution; his interview also acknowledges that access creates risks that must be managed.

His argument is not “release everything”

Altman described two serious failure directions: a major safety accident and excessive concentration of power. In his account, concern about an accident led OpenAI to delay one model release because he believed the risk was too high. He also said the company would keep moving toward broad distribution as it gained stronger confidence in alignment. This is Altman’s account of company reasoning in the interview, not an independent safety assessment of the model or the decision.

He summarized the trade-off this way: “We are willing to accept some things going wrong to make sure that this is a widely held and used and democratic technology.” That statement indicates a willingness to tolerate some failures in pursuit of access; it does not specify what failures are acceptable, how likely they are, or what safeguards would be sufficient.

Altman also cautioned that AI risk can be used to justify concentrating power, while insisting that the underlying risks are real. His position, as presented in the interview, is not that access should trump safety. It is that both the dangers of broad access and the dangers of restricting control to a small group belong in the same policy discussion.

Open models and the cybersecurity trade-off

Altman said he supports open-source models, while warning that they could bring a “tidal wave of cybersecurity problems.” He added: “And we’re going to, as a society, I think, have to just accept some fairly severe cyber incidents from open models in exchange for the liberty that comes with that.”

That is a qualitative prediction and a value judgment about the balance between liberty and harm. The interview provides no incident rate or quantified forecast behind “tidal wave,” and it does not establish how many or what kinds of incidents society should accept. The claim should therefore be read as Altman’s warning and proposed trade-off, not as a measured estimate.

What regulation Altman favors

Altman rejected an all-or-nothing choice between unrestricted innovation and comprehensive restriction. He described a middle path: preserve innovation and broad access while establishing guardrails for unusually powerful technology. Among the practices he pointed to were incident reporting, standards before release, and a liability framework.

That approach combines distribution with public rules rather than relying only on a company’s internal judgment. It also leaves important questions open: the interview does not set out detailed standards, identify who would enforce them, or spell out how liability should work. The practical balance would depend on those choices, not on the Prometheus metaphor itself.

What the interview establishes—and what it does not

The interview establishes how Altman framed his ambitions and the risks he sees. It does not demonstrate that broad access will produce more good than harm, independently verify the rationale for a delayed release, or quantify the cybersecurity risks of open models. No numerical probability or measure of AI access or harm is supplied in the exchange.

For that reason, the headline is best understood as commentary on Altman’s self-described mission, not a factual claim that he called himself a savior or that his approach will succeed. The most revealing part of the interview is the tension in his own account: he wants AI widely distributed, but he also argues for safety thresholds and public guardrails while acknowledging that broader access can bring serious risks.
