The company says text filters and moderation remain in place. If Roblox prompts you, use the in-app instructions and choose an eligible age-check method; exact requirements and chat rules can vary by region and account.
Why Roblox asks for a facial age estimate or ID
Roblox announced that age checks would be required to use chat where chat is available. The check helps Roblox apply age-based communication settings and connect users with people in similar age groups or Trusted Friends. It does not establish that a user can send unfiltered messages.
Roblox’s January 7, 2026 announcement described age-based chat rules that limit communication between adults and children younger than 16. The applicable age groups and communication options can depend on the feature, account, and region, so follow the current prompt shown in your Roblox account. Roblox’s announcement explains the rollout.
Does an age check bypass Roblox chat filters?
No. Roblox describes age checks and content moderation as separate safety layers. An age check supports age-based access and communication settings. Filters are intended to block or remove content that violates Roblox’s standards, and the company says it proactively monitors text chat and filters public chat. Roblox also advises users to report content that gets through. No filter or other safety system can guarantee that every harmful message will be stopped.

Roblox’s January 2026 announcement reports that testing by the UK Age Check Certification Scheme found a 1.4-year mean absolute error for users younger than 18. That is a reported average, not a promise that every individual estimate will be within 1.4 years. Roblox’s statement gives the company’s account of the testing.
Choose an age-check method
| Method | Who can use it | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Facial age estimation | Users offered the option in Roblox’s flow | A working camera and an in-app selfie process. Roblox says it analyzes facial images and video to estimate age. |
| Government-issued ID verification | Users aged 13 or older | Your own government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, passport, or residency card, plus a selfie to check that you match the ID photograph. |
Roblox does not identify one method as the best choice for everyone. Consider what information each requires and which option you are comfortable using. Do not use another person’s ID or facial image.

If your current device has no camera
Roblox says its facial age-estimation flow can show a QR code that transfers the process to a mobile device with camera access. You generally do not need to buy a webcam or another device just for this check.
What happens to facial images and video?
Roblox says the images and video submitted for facial age estimation are deleted after processing, and says Persona processes the facial-estimation material. Can you skip the age check?
Roblox says age checks are needed for the features they unlock; that does not mean chat will remain available without a check wherever Roblox requires one. If you do not want to complete it, you may not be able to use the affected chat features. Check the prompt and current help information for your account and region rather than assuming the same rule applies to every user.
What to do if Roblox estimates your age incorrectly
Roblox says it may ask a user to check again if it detects a discrepancy with the estimated age. Depending on the user’s age and account, the listed correction routes include ID verification for users aged 13 or older and linked parental controls for some child accounts. Some changes are limited to one use.

- If helping a child, Roblox recommends linking a parent account first. During the child’s facial estimate, the child—not the parent—should be in front of the camera.
- Use only the correction route available for that account. If the outcome remains disputed, follow Roblox’s current official support instructions. Roblox says support cannot manually verify IDs or change account settings.

Age-based chat settings, content filtering and moderation, and parental controls and reporting serve different purposes. Families can review parental controls, report content that violates Roblox’s standards, and talk with children about online interactions. An age check changes access and age-based communication settings; it is not a guarantee that every interaction is safe.

Roblox reported on February 5, 2026, that 45% of its 144 million global daily active users had completed an age check. Among age-checked daily active users, Roblox reported 35% younger than 13, 38% ages 13 to 17, and 27% age 18 or older. These are company-reported figures, and Roblox cautioned that the age-check cohorts could change as more users complete checks. See Moving Beyond Self-Reported Age.
