Qualcomm says “Gen 5” counts the fifth generation of its premium Snapdragon 8-series platforms since it introduced its single-digit naming identity. “Elite” identifies the portfolio’s top premium tier. The apparent gap is that Qualcomm launched the 2024 Snapdragon 8 Elite as a new standalone tier, rather than naming it “Elite Gen 1.”

Why is it called Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5?

Qualcomm’s explanation is that the name combines a tier label with a generation label. In a September 14, 2025, post, Qualcomm marketing executive Don McGuire wrote: “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms since we introduced our new single digit naming and visual identity.” Read Qualcomm’s naming explanation.

  • Snapdragon 8: the premium 8-series family.
  • Elite: Qualcomm’s designation for its top premium products.
  • Gen 5: Qualcomm’s count of generations in its premium 8-series platform lineage under the single-digit naming identity.

That generational count is Qualcomm’s stated naming rationale. It should not be read as an independently verified count of every chip design or architecture generation.

Why did Qualcomm skip Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2?

Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon 8 Elite in October 2024 as a new standalone tier. Its launch announcement called it the first Snapdragon mobile platform with the custom Qualcomm Oryon CPU and said flagship platforms were taking on the Elite name. See the 2024 announcement.

Before Elite, Qualcomm used numbered names such as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Gen 3 for products in its 8-series. In its 2024 explanation, Qualcomm described Elite as the pinnacle of the Snapdragon 8-series roadmap and distinguished it from other 8-series platforms. The 2025 “Gen 5” name therefore follows Qualcomm’s broader premium 8-series generation count, rather than a sequence in which the first Elite chip had to be called “Elite Gen 1.” Read Qualcomm’s 2024 Elite explainer.

What does “Elite” mean—and is it the same tier as Snapdragon 8 Gen 5?

Qualcomm says Elite is reserved for its most industry-leading products and describes Snapdragon 8 Elite as the pinnacle of the premium 8-series family. It also says naming and positioning can reflect performance capabilities, launch timing, consumer preferences, price points and portfolio fit. In McGuire’s 2025 explanation, the factors named are performance capabilities, launch timing and how each platform fits into the broader portfolio.

The labels answer different questions: “Elite” signals portfolio position, while “Gen 5” is Qualcomm’s generational label. Do not infer that a non-Elite Snapdragon 8 product is poor; Qualcomm positions its other 8-series platforms for different market needs, and says they can still deliver exceptional mobile experiences.

What the name does—and does not—tell you about a phone

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is a mobile platform, but the name alone does not establish the exact configuration or performance of a particular handset. Qualcomm’s product information says maximum CPU speed varies by platform version: it lists a 4.74 GHz configuration and says a 4.6 GHz version is also available. Qualcomm directs readers to OEM specifications for the version and CPU speed in a specific device. Check Qualcomm’s platform specifications.
