Pixel photos can look overprocessed because the Camera app creates a finished image with computational processing, including HDR rendering. That look may simply differ from your preference; blur, halos, glare, and distorted colors are separate problems with different fixes. Start by identifying what looks wrong, then adjust the available camera controls or use a RAW file when you want more editing control.
First identify what looks wrong
Check whether the effect appears in every scene or only in low light, portraits, or shots with a bright light source. Take a comparison photo from another angle or in different lighting. This can help distinguish a preferred color or contrast style from blur, focus trouble, lens contamination, or optical flare.
- Too much contrast, sharpening, or color: the finished JPEG’s rendering may not match your preference.
- Unnaturally smooth or altered faces: check Face Retouching.
- Soft or blurred details: check focus, lens cleanliness, and low-light movement.
- Halos or streaks near lights: change the angle and try without flash.
For a different rendering, use the controls your Pixel offers
Look settings are model-specific
Google’s Camera settings help says the default Look affects HDR photo processing on supported Pixel 11 series models. That is a documented rendering control for those devices, not a setting that should be assumed to exist on every Pixel. Check the Camera app settings on your phone for the options available to your model. Google’s Camera settings instructions describe the supported controls.
Use RAW+JPEG when you want editing control
A JPEG is the convenient, processed image. RAW+JPEG capture saves that JPEG alongside a separate RAW file that you can edit in Google Photos or another RAW editor. RAW provides an alternative starting point; it is not a switch that makes the Camera app save an untouched JPEG or eliminates the need to edit.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In the Camera app, open Camera settings and enable RAW/JPEG.
- Turn on RAW + JPEG for capture.
- In Google Photos, look for the RAW badge to identify the paired files.
- Open the RAW file and edit it in Google Photos or your preferred RAW editor.
See Google’s RAW/JPEG setup guidance and Google’s instructions for editing RAW/JPEG pairs. Google’s general support instructions document RAW capture and selected model-specific controls, not a universal switch to turn off all computational processing.
Reduce portrait retouching
Face Retouching can change skin texture, under-eye tone, and eye brightness. If faces look too smooth or altered, choose Off or a lighter option such as Subtle if your phone offers it. Google’s cited help describes Off, Subtle, and Smooth; availability can vary by device. Google’s Pixel photo guidance explains the feature.

For low-light blur, compare capture methods
In dim conditions, movement from the phone or subject can make details look soft. Try Night Sight with both the phone and subject still; a tripod or stable surface can help. Compare a Night Sight image with shots using flash and no flash, because flash can change the scene’s appearance and may introduce unwanted effects.
Google recommends keeping the phone and subject still while Night Sight captures an image. If you have one, a phone tripod for Night Sight or another stable support can reduce camera movement. Google’s photo-quality troubleshooting guidance covers Night Sight and low-light capture.

For blur, glare, or unexpected artifacts, check the camera setup
- Clean the lens: use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth.
- Check anything covering the camera: remove a case or film that overlaps the camera area.
- Set focus: tap the subject on screen before taking the photo.
- Inspect the camera glass: look for damage or condensation.
- Reduce flare: avoid pointing directly at the sun or another strong light; try taking the shot without flash if halos or glare appear.
For certain unexpected distortions or line patterns, Google specifically suggests turning off HDR+ Control on Pixel 3a and earlier. Do not treat this as a general fix for newer phones or every image that looks too processed; feature availability depends on the model. Google’s troubleshooting steps give the device-specific guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the problem continues, troubleshoot the Camera app
After checking lighting, lens, and focus, try clearing the Camera app cache or storage. Google says clearing Camera storage does not delete saved photos or videos. If the issue began after a Camera app update, Google also suggests uninstalling recent Camera app updates and restarting the phone. Use the steps in Google’s photo or video quality troubleshooting article, since available app controls can vary.
