Physical game releases are shrinking because digital distribution lets publishers sell without manufacturing and shipping a disc or cartridge for each copy, reach buyers beyond retail shelves, adjust prices more freely and keep older games on sale. Players have also shifted toward digital purchases. But boxed games have not vanished: the change varies by company, platform and region, and Sony’s announced PlayStation production change does not begin until January 2028.

Why are physical game releases disappearing?

Digital distribution changes the economics

A physical release requires manufacturing media and packaging, moving stock through distribution, and finding retail shelf space. Digital delivery avoids those physical production and distribution steps. It also gives publishers more flexibility over pricing and lets them continue selling older titles without relying on new boxed stock. Capcom describes these as advantages of digital distribution, including more flexible pricing and a longer-lasting catalog business; the company’s rationale is its own, not proof that every publisher earns more from every digital sale. Capcom’s COO discussion and CEO discussion explain its position.

Capcom President and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto has said physical sales faced limits on retail shelf space, pricing control and anti-piracy measures. Digital stores reduce those particular constraints, though they bring their own costs, such as platform fees, hosting and marketing. The available figures do not establish a universal net-margin advantage for digital games.

Player buying habits have shifted too

Publishers point to changing preferences as well as business advantages. Electronic Arts’ fiscal 2025 filing estimates that 78% of its full-game units on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 were digital downloads, up from 73% in fiscal 2024 and 68% in fiscal 2023. EA says Microsoft and Sony supply its digital unit counts, while its packaged-goods units are estimates based on retail and distribution partners in North America, Europe and Asia. These are EA figures for those console generations, not a worldwide industry share. EA’s filing describes the estimates and their scope.

Marvel's Wolverine PS5
  • Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
  • Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
  • An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
  • A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
EA fiscal year Estimated digital share of full-game units
2023 68%
2024 73%
2025 78%

Those figures show digital’s growth within EA’s specified console business. They do not separate how much of the broader move comes from customers choosing downloads, publishers issuing fewer physical editions, platform mix or retail decisions. Sony cites changing consumer preferences, while Capcom emphasizes commercial advantages; neither explanation alone measures the causes across the industry.

Does physical still sell?

Yes. UK boxed-game sales remained substantial in 2024, although they fell year over year. The Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA) reported the following figures in its 2025 Yearbook:

UK boxed software, 2024 Sales value Year-over-year change
Nintendo Switch games About £130 million Down more than 34%
PS5 games Just over £132 million Down 30%

These are UK boxed-software sales, not worldwide totals or total spending on games. They illustrate both that physical releases still matter and that the trend differs by platform. ERA’s 2025 Yearbook provides the regional figures.

Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Company-level sales data also show that physical units have not disappeared. Capcom’s table for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 reports figures in units of ten thousand: 5,493 digital units (54.93 million) and 413 physical units (4.13 million). This is Capcom’s own sales volume, not a market-wide measure; its 2027/3 figure is marked as a plan, not a completed result. Capcom’s sales data identifies the unit scale.

What does Sony’s 2028 announcement mean?

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced on July 1, 2026, that production of physical game discs for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony explicitly says the change does not affect games already released in disc format or games releasing in disc format before that date. It is a Sony policy announcement; it does not establish a similar schedule for Xbox, Nintendo or other platforms, and it does not say existing discs will stop working. Sony’s announcement sets out the timing and scope.

Who benefits when releases go digital?

Publishers gain distribution and catalog flexibility

Publishers can avoid the manufacturing and physical distribution costs associated with boxed copies, sell through digital storefronts in more places, adjust prices and keep older titles available. Capcom has described catalog sales as a stable and potentially more profitable revenue source after development costs have been amortized. That is a company-specific assessment: actual returns also depend on platform fees, marketing, hosting and how well a title sells.

  • The Anniversary Edition includes a pixel character sticker sheet.

Platform storefronts gain a larger role

As more purchases happen through console stores, platform operators become the route through which customers buy and manage more of their game libraries. Digital libraries also connect to account-based services, updates and online features. The cited company data and Sony policy establish the shift toward digital and its distribution route, but do not quantify how much additional profit platform operators make specifically because physical releases decline.

Physical retailers and distribution businesses lose ground

When fewer new games arrive in boxes, retailers and businesses involved in manufacturing and physical distribution face reduced demand for those releases. The UK sales decline is evidence of a shrinking boxed market in that region; it does not quantify the resulting revenue or employment effect for the retail sector as a whole.

Players trade convenience for some forms of control

Digital buyers can avoid waiting for local stock and may find older games still listed for sale. Physical editions give buyers tangible media and may allow lending or resale, depending on the platform, edition and applicable terms. Neither format guarantees permanent access: account licenses can govern redownloads or transfers, and games that depend on company servers may lose some or all functionality if those servers close.

For EU context, the European Commission’s 2026 communication notes the server-closure risk and describes planned engagement with stakeholders on end-of-life practices by the end of 2026. Its response did not propose a general legal duty to keep commercially discontinued games playable. This is EU policy context, not a statement of law elsewhere. The Commission communication and its announcement describe the issue and planned engagement.

How to check what a physical edition actually gives you

A box does not automatically mean the full game is stored on its disc or cartridge. Before choosing a physical or digital edition, check the specific release and platform:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Included media: Does the box contain a disc or cartridge, a download code, or a mix? Is a substantial download or installation data required?
  • Offline use: Can the game launch and remain playable without account services or game servers? Which features depend on being online?
  • Access and transfer: What do the platform license and edition allow for lending, resale, account transfer or future redownloads?
  • Availability and price: Is the boxed version in stock where you live, and how does its current total price compare with the platform store?
  • Convenience and storage: Consider physical storage and swapping media against download time, drive space and access to the purchasing account.

These details are release-specific, so check the listing and publisher or platform information for the exact edition rather than relying on the box format alone.
