But a suggestive shape is not proof of a built vessel: the site was judged natural after a 1960 expedition, and published geological analyses identify features promoted as wood, metal fittings and anchors as ordinary rock and minerals. A university project under way in 2026 has not changed that conclusion; its results remain preliminary and inconclusive.
Why the formation keeps attracting Ark claims
Durupınar is a natural-looking, boat-shaped geological formation near Doğubayazıt in eastern Türkiye. Turkish army captain İlhan Durupınar noticed its shape in aerial photographs in 1959. Geologist Lorence G. Collins gives its length as 157 metres (515 feet) in a 2016 article; that measurement describes the formation, not an independently verified ancient ship.
The outline invites comparison with a vessel, and that visual impression gives later claims an intuitive starting point. Advocates have also pointed to internal lines or right angles, radar interpretations, a length they consider compatible with the biblical Ark under a chosen cubit measurement, and large stones they identify as anchors. Those are interpretations of observations, not proof that people built the formation or that it belonged to Noah.
The distinction matters: a landscape can look like an object without having been made as one. Once a site is associated with a famous story, features that might otherwise be read as geology can be taken as confirming details. That helps explain the persistence of the claim, but it does not strengthen the archaeological evidence by itself.

What the geological evidence says
A 1960 expedition associated with the Archaeological Research Foundation and led by George Vandeman and Arthur Brandenberger examined the site. Its surveys, as recounted by early Christianity scholar Eric Vanden Eykel, “revealed no sign that the object was man-made.” The expedition concluded that the feature was a natural geological formation.
Later geological explanations account for the boatlike shape and patterns through natural processes. Vanden Eykel reports geologist Murat Avcı’s interpretation that a large limestone block moved downslope in a landslide and was shaped by earthflow and related processes. Collins’s 2016 analysis addresses specific materials cited by Ark proponents:

| Feature cited by proponents | Geological interpretation |
|---|---|
| Material described as petrified wood | Collins identifies it as basalt. |
| Alleged iron washers, rivets or brackets | Collins identifies them as cemented mineral grains. |
| Large stones interpreted as anchors | Collins says rocks of this kind occur naturally in the area. |
| Boatlike outline and internal patterns | Avcı’s account, as reported by Vanden Eykel, explains the form through a moving limestone block, landslide and earthflow processes. |
These analyses concern the Durupınar formation and the materials identified there; they do not decide theological questions about Noah or the meaning of Genesis. The evidence also should not be presented as a contest between two equally supported explanations: the earlier expedition and published geological analysis support a natural formation, while the more recent project has not reached a conclusion.
How the Ark interpretation developed
After the 1960 expedition, the Ark identification resurfaced through Ron Wyatt’s later interpretations of scans and site features. David Fasold initially supported the interpretation and published a book in 1988. He later changed his position and, with geologist Lorence Collins, co-authored a critique of the claim. As Vanden Eykel reports, Fasold described the site this way: “the supposed Ark near [Doğubayazıt] is a completely natural rock formation. It cannot have been Noah’s Ark nor even a man-made model.”

The change is notable because early support for the claim did not survive further consideration. It is not, on its own, geological proof; the relevant evidence is the site’s observed geology and the published analyses of its features.
What the 2026 research project has—and has not—established
A project directed by Cenker Atila at Sivas Cumhuriyet University is described as officially approved and ongoing. Its project website lists geophysical documentation work including ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), LiDAR and core drilling. The project’s stated output is geophysical documentation, and it says it does not authenticate historical or religious claims.

As of October 7, 2026, the project’s findings do not establish that Durupınar is man-made or Noah’s Ark. Vanden Eykel’s October 6 account describes the results as preliminary and inconclusive, with samples awaiting laboratory analysis and evaluation expected to continue into 2027. The project website itself calls the data suggestive rather than conclusive. Scans can document subsurface or surface features; their interpretation still requires analysis, and a scan does not identify a feature as a biblical vessel by itself.
The project website also repeats some interpretations advanced by Ark proponents. Those claims should be attributed to the proponents or project, rather than treated as independently verified findings. Until analysis is complete and its results are reported, the project is ongoing work—not confirmation of an Ark.

What Genesis adds to the question
The story’s cultural and religious significance is separate from the archaeological status of Durupınar. Vanden Eykel places Genesis’s flood story alongside ancient Near Eastern flood traditions, including the Atrahasis epic and the Epic of Gilgamesh. In those stories, a survivor is warned and builds a boat. In his reading, Genesis reshapes that narrative: violence and corruption are central to the problem, and the story ends with a covenant.
Vanden Eykel also interprets the flood story as recognizing that catastrophe does not permanently remove human flaws, while emphasizing that life continues despite them. This is a scholarly reading of the text, not a verdict on what all scholars or religious readers believe. Literary parallels can help explain why the Ark story remains compelling; they do not establish where a vessel landed or authenticate a particular rock formation.
What a careful conclusion looks like
Durupınar’s shiplike outline explains why people return to it, and the Ark interpretation has a history of scans, measurements and claimed artifacts. But resemblance and suggestive patterns are not equivalent to evidence of construction. The 1960 expedition found no sign of human construction, Collins’s published analysis identifies the promoted materials as natural rock and minerals, and the 2026 university project remains unfinished. On the evidence available as of October 7, 2026, Durupınar is a natural geological formation, not an authenticated Ark.
