Bluesky’s post-election growth shows that it has become an appealing alternative for a politically engaged, more left-leaning audience—but the evidence does not show that most left-wing users have abandoned X. In the available studies, many people had accounts on both platforms, while sampled news influencers remained more likely to post on X. X may therefore retain an advantage in reach even as Bluesky gains cultural and political importance.
What does “leaving X for Bluesky” actually mean?
Creating a Bluesky account, moving some posts or conversations there, and abandoning X are different things. The best detailed comparison available here tracks accounts and posting among a selected group of news influencers; it does not establish a current, platform-wide rate of permanent departure.

Pew Research Center followed a pre-existing sample of 500 news influencers—people with at least 100,000 followers on major platforms—and did not add influencers found only on Bluesky. In that sample, the share with a Bluesky account rose from 21% before the November 2024 U.S. election to 43% by March 2025. The result shows rapid adoption within this group, not the share of all social-media users who joined or left either service. Pew’s account comparison
As of early 2025, Pew’s rounded account categories were 37% with both X and Bluesky, 46% with X but not Bluesky, and 6% with Bluesky but not X. X accounts remained common in the sample: 82% had one in early 2025, compared with 85% in summer 2024. Account ownership does not tell us how often someone visits, posts, or reads either platform.

Why is Bluesky attracting more left-leaning users?
The clearest explanation supported by the evidence is that Bluesky’s observed audiences are more left-leaning and politically engaged than their X counterparts in the populations studied. That can make Bluesky attractive to people looking for a social environment where more of their political community is present. It describes an audience pattern, however, not a proven motive for every person who joined.
In Pew’s news-influencer sample, 69% of those who identified with the left had a Bluesky account, compared with 15% of those identified with the right. Yet three-quarters of the left-leaning influencers still had an X account. The finding supports politically asymmetric adoption, not a wholesale left-wing exit from X. Pew’s political breakdown

A separate UK survey points to a politically engaged audience there, too, but it measures a different population. Verian surveyed UK residents from November 2024 to January 2025: 84% of surveyed Bluesky users said they followed politics very or fairly closely, compared with 58% of surveyed X users. The timing also matters. Bluesky’s growth followed the November 2024 U.S. election, amid public attention to X’s ownership, political role, and platform environment. Pew identifies those developments as context for users considering alternatives, but the studies cited here do not ask all people who left X to rank their reasons. They therefore do not establish that a particular feature, such as X’s algorithm or moderation, is the single cause of migration.

How much has Bluesky grown—and what do the totals tell us?
Bluesky reported growing from 2.89 million users to 25.94 million during 2024. Its FAQ reported more than 44 million users as of May 2026. Those are company-reported totals, not independently comparable measures of daily or monthly active use, and they cannot be directly compared with an X active-user figure. A smaller academic preprint reported that 18% of scholars in its sample had transitioned from Twitter/X to Bluesky. That describes a scholarly population and should not be treated as a general-public migration rate. The academic preprint

Is X more active, or just bigger?
Among the influencers Pew observed in the first three months of 2025, X retained the stronger posting habit: sampled X influencers were more likely to post regularly than sampled Bluesky influencers. Of influencers in the sample who had Bluesky accounts, 48% did not post there regularly. That distinction helps explain why a fast-growing user total does not necessarily mean an equivalent transfer of reach. X’s established audience and existing networks may continue to make it useful for distribution, while Bluesky can attract a politically important segment and host conversations that users also follow elsewhere. The evidence supports coexistence in the populations measured, not a definitive forecast of which platform will dominate.

Does Bluesky’s open protocol change the choice?
Bluesky presents portability as part of its design proposition. Its FAQ describes AT Protocol as “a protocol for public conversation and an open-source framework for building social apps, meaning people have transparency into how it is built and what is being developed.” The company says the protocol is intended to let people move among services while keeping identity and follow relationships. That is a design goal, not a guarantee that every social connection, feature, or experience transfers seamlessly. Bluesky’s FAQ
Portability also does not mean governance disappears. Bluesky’s transparency reporting documents moderation, enforcement, and operational challenges, including cross-platform issues. Its 2024 report recorded 6.48 million moderation reports, compared with 358,000 in 2023. These are company-reported report volumes; they are not a direct measure of harm prevalence, particularly as the service’s user base and reporting behavior changed. What does “X will get over it” get right—and miss?
The phrase works as a strategic hypothesis, not as a finding established by these studies. X still had accounts for 82% of Pew’s influencer sample in early 2025, and those sampled influencers posted there more regularly than on Bluesky. That suggests X retained substantial presence and distribution among the influencers studied even as Bluesky grew.
But account shares and posting frequency cannot prove that X is immune to future shifts in cultural influence, audience attention, or advertiser confidence. Nor does Bluesky’s reported user total prove equivalent active use. A migration can matter to political conversation and media culture before it becomes dominant in total-user numbers. The evidence supports a measured conclusion: Bluesky is a meaningful alternative for some users, particularly in the samples described, while a clean handover from X has not been demonstrated.
