At Overwatch 2’s October 2022 launch, NVIDIA reported that Blizzard had raised the game’s frame-rate cap from the original Overwatch’s 400 FPS to 600 FPS. The increase was linked to the arrival of GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs, including the RTX 4090, but 600 FPS was a software ceiling—not a performance guarantee for every PC or match.

What the 600 FPS figure means

A frame-rate cap is the game’s upper limit on how many frames it will render per second. It does not mean a system will reach that rate. Actual FPS depends on the PC and the game’s workload, including resolution, graphics settings, and whether the CPU can keep up with the GPU.

NVIDIA’s October 4, 2022 launch article said Blizzard raised Overwatch 2’s cap to 600 FPS, up from 400 FPS in the original Overwatch. That is a launch-era account from NVIDIA; the available sources do not verify the cap in the October 2026 game build. NVIDIA’s launch coverage also connected the higher ceiling to RTX 40 Series GPUs and Reflex.

What an RTX 4090 demonstration achieved

PC Gamer reported that an NVIDIA RTX 4090 demonstration ran Overwatch 2 above 460 FPS at 1440p. The report noted that CPU choice could limit higher frame rates. This was a report about a demonstration, not an independent, controlled benchmark or a result every RTX 4090 owner should expect. PC Gamer’s report attributed the explanation to NVIDIA senior director of product management Justin Walker, rather than to a direct statement from a Blizzard developer.

NVIDIA’s own launch article separately claimed RTX 40 Series frame rates above 500 FPS at 1440p and system latency as low as 8 milliseconds. Those are NVIDIA’s promotional claims, not independent results. NVIDIA also said Reflex could reduce latency by “up to 60%”; that figure is a vendor claim, not a universal measured outcome.

Why 600 FPS does not require a 600 Hz monitor

FPS describes how many frames a game renders; refresh rate describes how many times a display updates each second. They are related but distinct. A 600 FPS cap does not require a 600 Hz screen: NVIDIA’s launch coverage discussed 360 Hz 1440p esports displays, not a requirement for a 600 Hz monitor. The benefit a player sees depends in part on the display’s refresh rate and the rest of the system.

Launch-era settings Blizzard recommended

In its launch-era developer guidance, Blizzard advised players to match the frame-rate cap to their monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It also recommended NVIDIA Reflex + Boost for NVIDIA graphics cards, or Reduced Buffering for other GPUs, and High Precision Mouse Input. These are Blizzard’s recommendations from that period, not confirmation that the same advice applies universally to every current build or setup. Read Blizzard’s developer blog.

How the 600 FPS claim was attributed

NVIDIA’s launch article said Blizzard increased the cap, while PC Gamer reported Walker’s explanation that the RTX 40 Series’ speed prompted the change. The sources establish NVIDIA’s account and the reported demonstration context; they do not include a direct Blizzard developer explanation of the decision. A separate TechSpot report also covered the claim and noted that it could not independently confirm the previous cap. TechSpot’s coverage.
