A synthetic check can stay green even after it stops testing the page it was built to protect. In Sergey Shinder’s account, a portal monitor followed a redirect to the login page, then passed because that page returned HTTP 200 and contained the same generic “Customer Portal” text as the account page. The check showed that a page responded—not that the test customer was signed in or could use the portal.
How did the synthetic check end up on the login page?
Shinder says the customer portal check ran every two minutes. It was intended to open an account page as a test customer and pass if the response was HTTP 200 and included “Customer Portal.”
After the portal moved to a new single sign-on provider, its stored session cookie was no longer accepted. The HTTP client followed the resulting redirect to the login page. That page also returned 200 and displayed “Customer Portal” in a shared header, so both assertions passed even though the monitor was no longer checking the authenticated account page.
Five weeks later, according to Shinder, a deployment changed how saved addresses loaded. Customers with more than one address saw an error panel, but the test account had only one address. Shinder reports that the account page was broken for nine days for one fifth of customers while the check remained green. Those figures describe his reported incident; the article does not independently verify them or establish an industry-wide rate.

What does a green synthetic check actually prove?
A 200 status confirms that the request received a successful HTTP response. It does not, by itself, establish which page the monitor reached, whether authentication succeeded, or whether an important customer task worked.
Likewise, an assertion against generic text can match shared page elements such as a site header. If both the login page and authenticated page contain that text, the assertion cannot distinguish them. A useful check needs evidence specific to the intended authenticated journey—not merely evidence that some page loaded.

How can you tell whether a check was redirected to login?
Make redirects and sign-in outcomes visible rather than allowing them to disappear inside a successful result. In the changes he describes, Shinder recommends treating a 3xx response as a distinct failure instead of silently following it, and recording the final URL in the check log. The status and URL together can reveal that the monitor reached an unexpected destination.
Authentication should also have its own outcome. Shinder says he changed the check to sign in afresh on each run, kept the password in a secret store, and surfaced sign-in failure separately from a page outage. That distinction helps identify whether the monitor failed to establish a session or whether the authenticated page itself failed.

What should an authenticated-page check assert?
Use page-specific evidence tied to the customer journey the monitor is meant to protect. Shinder says his revised assertions looked for the test customer’s account number and the address-list element—content that should appear on the authenticated account page rather than merely in shared site chrome.
Assertions should reflect a useful outcome, not just the presence of any matching element. For example, if the goal is to monitor an account page’s saved addresses, checking that the address list is present is more relevant than checking a broad brand label. The exact assertion depends on the application and the journey being monitored.

Why does the test account’s data matter?
A synthetic journey can miss a defect when its account does not have the data or state that triggers the problem. In Shinder’s incident, the test customer had one address, while the reported error affected customers with more than one. The check could not expose a failure that its test data never exercised.
Shinder says he varied the test account’s data and states, including three addresses, a cancelled order, and an expired saved card. The broader principle is to choose representative states that exercise meaningful application behavior. This is not a guarantee that every customer-specific defect will be detected, but it can prevent a monitor from validating only the simplest account state.

What capabilities should you look for in a synthetic monitoring tool?
Shinder’s account does not name or compare monitoring products. When choosing or configuring a tool, assess whether it supports the capabilities the check needs:
- Detecting redirects or disabling automatic redirect following, so an unexpected 3xx response is not mistaken for a successful target-page check.
- Running authenticated browser journeys or otherwise establishing a fresh, valid session.
- Asserting on content specific to the authenticated page and relevant customer task.
- Storing credentials securely, rather than embedding passwords in check scripts or logs.
- Showing the final URL and a clear failure reason, with authentication failures distinguishable from application outages.
These are selection criteria derived from the failure Shinder describes, not results of a comparative product evaluation.
