An older Wi-Fi device can slow newer devices when they are actively sharing a busy wireless channel: Wi-Fi gives devices opportunities to transmit over shared airtime, and a slower transmission can occupy that airtime longer. But an old device does not automatically make every newer device operate at its speed. The effect depends on traffic, signal quality, interference, channel use, and router settings.

Why a slower device can affect other devices

Wi-Fi is a shared radio medium. Devices using the same channel contend for opportunities to send data, so one device’s transmissions use airtime that is then unavailable to others. When a device sends at a lower data rate, it can take longer to transmit the same amount of data. Cisco’s deployment guidance describes lower rates as less airtime-efficient because radios remain on the air longer for the same data: Cisco’s wireless mesh deployment guide.

This is a possible source of congestion, not a fixed slowdown caused by the mere presence of an old device. It matters most when that device is actively transferring data on a channel that is already busy. An idle device does not use data airtime like one streaming or uploading, although Wi-Fi management traffic still exists.

Why older devices do not force every device to use an old speed

Wi-Fi compatibility does not mean that a router switches all clients to the oldest device’s maximum speed. A router can support older devices while newer clients use radio modes they support. Apple recommends enabling all radio modes offered by a router so each device can connect using the fastest mode it supports. Cisco also describes Wi-Fi 6 as backward-compatible with legacy clients.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

The practical concern is shared channel time and conditions, rather than a universal speed downgrade. Apple notes that the bandwidth available on a channel is shared among devices using it, and that interference from nearby routers or devices on the same channel can change performance: Apple’s recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

What else can make the newer device slow?

  • Weak signal: A device far from the router or blocked by walls may use a lower data rate, increasing the time its transmissions take.
  • Channel congestion or interference: Nearby routers and other devices can compete for or disrupt use of the same channel.
  • Heavy traffic: Multiple active clients can consume more of the channel’s available airtime.
  • Router configuration or limits: Supported radio modes, bands, firmware, and the router’s capacity all affect how well it serves the devices connected to it.

These factors can overlap. A slow result by itself does not establish that an older device is the cause.

How to check whether an older device is contributing

  1. Identify the connections. Check the router’s device list or management app to see which band and access point the older and newer devices use. If the router shows channel details, note whether they share a channel.
  2. Compare under different traffic conditions. Check the newer device’s performance while the older device is idle, then while it is transferring data. A difference is a clue about your particular network, not a universal benchmark or proof on its own.
  3. Enable supported Wi-Fi modes and bands. In the router’s wireless settings, enable all modes and bands the hardware supports so compatible clients can use their best available mode. Apple recommends enabling all offered radio modes.
  4. Update the router firmware and keep WMM enabled. Apple’s router guidance recommends current firmware and warns that disabling Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM) can affect network performance and reliability.
  5. Review channel selection. Use automatic channel selection if the router offers it. If problems continue, local interference and channel use may need attention; conditions vary by location.
  6. Reassess network names before adding more. Each SSID adds management overhead and reduces airtime available for data. Apple recommends three or fewer SSIDs on networks before Wi-Fi 6; adding separate network names is not a guaranteed fix for contention.

When to consider a router or access point upgrade

Consider new hardware only if the checks point to inadequate radio modes, coverage, or capacity. A Wi-Fi 6 router may be relevant when the existing router lacks newer modes or is not suited to the expected client load. An additional, appropriately placed access point may help when coverage or capacity planning is the issue. More modern standards can support better performance and more concurrent devices, but no specific speed increase is guaranteed; the result depends on the router, client mix, placement, and network conditions.

When comparing hardware, check the Wi-Fi generation and supported radio modes, supported bands, expected number and type of active clients, coverage layout, and compatibility with older devices and security settings. Separate bands or access points help only when they actually reduce contention or improve coverage.

Is there a predictable speed reduction?

No universal percentage or fixed speed loss for one older Wi-Fi client is established by the cited guidance. Cisco’s discussion explains the airtime mechanism, while Apple’s material gives router configuration guidance; neither provides a general home-network measurement for how much one old client slows another. Any numerical estimate would depend on a defined router, client mix, channel, signal quality, and traffic pattern.
