Older PCs used partitions to work around file-system size and efficiency limits, keep boot code within old BIOS address limits, separate operating systems with different requirements, and improve access patterns on mechanical hard drives. Those pressures have changed, but they have not vanished completely: Windows still uses partitions to boot and organize disks, and the limits of the older MBR partition scheme still matter on systems that use it.
Why older PCs split a hard drive into partitions
A partition is a defined region of a physical disk that an operating system can treat as a separate volume. In the DOS and early Windows era, dividing a disk could make storage usable within the limits of the operating system, file system, firmware, or hardware. The four problems below are historical themes, not a universal checklist that applied to every PC.
1. Older file systems struggled with large volumes
FAT capacity depended on the operating system and version. Microsoft documents historical FAT partition limits of 2 GB under MS-DOS and 4 GB under Windows NT, and notes that FAT performance could degrade as a volume grew (Microsoft’s overview of FAT, HPFS, and NTFS). A large disk could therefore be divided into smaller volumes that the installed software could handle more conveniently.
That was a limitation of particular old OS-and-file-system combinations, not an inherent limitation of partitions. It should not be read as a current Windows partition-size recommendation.

2. Old BIOS firmware could not boot from every part of a disk
Some older PCs had BIOS and disk-addressing restrictions that limited where bootable code could be found. The OS/2 Warp FAQ, dated February 20, 1995, describes systems whose BIOS required a startable partition to begin below cylinder 1024. One workaround was to keep the bootable area near the start of the disk and use another partition for space beyond that boundary (OS/2 Warp FAQ, Section 0403).
This is a historical BIOS-era constraint, not a general rule for modern UEFI computers. Boot compatibility still depends on the particular firmware and operating-system configuration.

3. Separate volumes helped operating systems coexist
Different operating systems could expect different file systems, boot arrangements, or disk layouts. Keeping their files in separate partitions reduced conflicts and made it possible to install more than one operating system on a PC. GParted describes separate partitions as one approach to multi-OS installations (GParted: Why Partition?).
The partition scheme itself also shaped what was possible. In Windows’ documented MBR layout, a basic disk can have up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition that contains logical drives (Microsoft’s basic-disk documentation). This structure is not the same as saying that every partition corresponds to a different operating system; partitions can serve other purposes too.

4. Mechanical hard drives had faster and slower regions
On a spinning hard drive, data near the outer tracks can transfer faster because more data passes under the head during each rotation. GParted notes that frequently accessed files could be placed near the start of a disk to take advantage of this behavior. That made partition placement a possible performance consideration on some HDDs, not a guaranteed speed boost for every workload.
SSDs have no moving parts or rotating tracks, so this HDD placement logic does not apply to them. SSD partition alignment can still matter, but it is a different concern (GParted: Why Partition?).

Which partition-related limits still matter?
MBR has a capacity ceiling
MBR uses 32-bit sector addressing. With 512-byte sectors, Microsoft says this reaches about 2.2 TB of product-labeled capacity; Microsoft’s references to “2 TB” use powers of two. GPT supports much larger addressing (Microsoft: Windows support for hard disks larger than 2 TB).
This is a limit of the MBR partition scheme, not a reason to divide a modern disk into multiple smaller partitions. Whether a computer can use GPT for booting depends on its firmware and operating-system configuration.

UEFI Windows still relies on partitions
Partitions remain part of modern disk and boot layouts. Microsoft’s Windows GPT documentation describes EFI System, Microsoft Reserved, and basic data partitions in UEFI installations. It also says that booting Windows from a GPT-initialized disk requires UEFI-capable firmware in the documented scenario; check the requirements for the specific Windows version and computer rather than assuming all systems use the same boot mode. Microsoft notes that “GPT disks use primary and backup partition tables for redundancy and CRC32 fields for improved partition data structure integrity” (Microsoft: Windows and GPT FAQ).
What partitioning does not do
Creating separate partitions on one physical disk does not create an independent backup: a failure of that disk can affect every volume on it. Nor is partitioning by itself a recovery plan. The 1995 OS/2 FAQ cautioned that separating applications and data solely for backup rarely made sense, and that reorganizing partitions could require a complete backup and restore (OS/2 Warp FAQ, Section 0403).
How to think about partitions on a current PC
For a present-day disk, the right setup depends on the machine and purpose—not on the old workarounds alone. Consider these distinctions before changing a disk layout:
Quick Recap
- Partition scheme: MBR has the 32-bit addressing limit described above; GPT supports larger disks and uses a different partition structure.
- Boot mode: Legacy BIOS and UEFI are not interchangeable assumptions. Confirm what the PC and operating system support before converting a boot disk.
- Operating system and file system: Compatibility needs can justify separate partitions, but historical FAT limits do not automatically apply to a modern installation.
- Drive type: HDD track placement and SSD alignment are different considerations; do not apply mechanical-disk performance advice to an SSD.
- Risk and recovery: Back up important files before repartitioning. Changing a layout can make data inaccessible if the operation fails or the wrong disk or volume is selected.
