Polish station Off Radio Krakow tried an experimental program with three AI-generated presenters, hoping to attract younger listeners. It ended the AI-hosted show after criticism focused on replacing human presenters and on an AI-generated segment framed as an interview with the late poet Wisława Szymborska. The episode was not a genuine interview or an authentic statement by Szymborska.
What Off Radio Krakow did
In 2024, Off Radio Krakow introduced three AI-generated presenters for an experimental program aimed at younger listeners. This was a program-level experiment; the available reporting does not say that the station replaced every employee or that its only motive was to cut costs. Futurism’s November 6, 2024 report describes the launch and the reaction.
Futurism also reported that listenership rose from “close to zero” to 8,000 after the experiment began. That is a figure attributed to the report, not independently verified audience data: the report’s cited measurement method is not established here.
Why the experiment drew criticism
Human presenters were being replaced
Critics objected to replacing human hosts with generated voices and personas. Former host Łukasz Zaleski, identified by Futurism as a fired presenter, said he was angry that real conversations and interviews had been replaced with something fake. Station editor-in-chief Mariusz Marcin Pulit, in turn, said he had been portrayed as wanting to replace people with avatars. These remarks reflect the dispute as reported at the time, rather than a complete account of the station’s staffing decisions.

The Szymborska segment blurred the line between fact and fabrication
The controversy also involved an AI-generated “interview” with Wisława Szymborska, the Polish poet who died in 2012. Futurism reported that both the interviewer and the interviewee were AI-generated. The exchange therefore should not be treated as a real interview, a recording of Szymborska, or evidence of what she would have said.
Using a deceased person’s identity in a fabricated conversation raises a distinct concern from using synthetic hosts: listeners may mistake generated material for a person’s genuine words, especially when the format resembles an interview. The reviewed sources establish the public controversy, but not a legal finding that the segment violated anyone’s rights.

How the station responded
Following the backlash, Off Radio Krakow ended the AI-hosted show, according to Futurism’s contemporaneous account. The OECD.AI incident entry also records the decision to end the experiment and the public discussion that followed. Its inclusion of the event is a record of societal and governance responses, not a legal determination.
At the time of the cancellation announcement, Pulit described the station as a pioneer facing a difficult fate. The reporting documents the end of this experiment; it does not establish whether the station later revived an AI-host format or what its programming is today.

What this case shows about AI presenters
The backlash was about more than whether listeners liked synthetic voices. The episode combined a workplace question—what happens to human presenters when a station deploys AI—with a trust question: whether listeners can tell when a person’s identity and words have been generated. For broadcasters considering similar formats, the case points to practical issues worth addressing before launch:

- Explain the role of AI: Make clear which presenters, voices, scripts, and interviews are synthetic.
- Set limits on real identities: Treat the use of a real person’s likeness, voice, or identity as a separate decision from creating a fictional AI host.
- Account for people affected: Be transparent about whether human workers’ roles are changing or being removed.
- Measure audience response carefully: Any audience figure should come with a clear definition and measurement method; the 8,000 figure reported in this case lacks that detail in the available account.
- Plan for public response: A format can attract attention while also damaging trust if disclosure and editorial judgment are unclear.
