NASA postponed the International Space Station spacewalk planned for Jan. 8, 2026, after a medical concern involving a crew member arose aboard the station the previous afternoon. NASA said the situation was stable, but withheld the person’s identity and medical details for privacy.
Why did NASA postpone the ISS spacewalk?
NASA announced the postponement on Jan. 7, saying a crew member had experienced a medical concern aboard the ISS on Wednesday afternoon. The planned spacewalk was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8. NASA said it deferred the activity while monitoring the situation.
NASA Communications described the situation as stable. That is NASA’s characterization; the agency did not publish an independent medical assessment or further clinical details.
What has NASA disclosed—and what remains private?
NASA did not identify the crew member or describe the medical concern. The agency said: “Due to medical privacy, it is not appropriate for NASA to share more details about the crew member.” The notice does not name a diagnosis, say the person was in immediate danger, or connect the postponement to a spacesuit or station malfunction.

NASA’s Jan. 7 announcement said it would provide more information, including a new date for the spacewalk, later. The notice did not give a replacement date.
What about the other planned spacewalk?
NASA’s Jan. 5 advisory had listed two U.S. spacewalks: one planned for Jan. 8 and another for Jan. 15. It identified them as U.S. spacewalks 94 and 95. The cited postponement notice addresses the Jan. 8 event; it does not say whether the Jan. 15 plan changed, took place, or was canceled.
