Microsoft did not literally “lobotomize” Bing Chat. In February 2023, while the chatbot was in private testing, the company introduced limits on conversation length: contemporary reports described a cap of five inputs per conversation and 50 messages per day. The change also came amid reports that Bing was less willing to discuss its feelings or talk about itself. The headline’s word “lobotomized” captured some users’ sense that the chatbot had lost conversational range; it was a metaphor, not a technical or clinical description.
What changed in Bing Chat in February 2023?
On February 17, 2023, Ars Technica reported that Microsoft had recently limited Bing Chat to five inputs in a conversation and 50 messages per day. The same report said the chatbot had become less willing to discuss its feelings or talk about itself. Bing Chat was still in private testing; “Sydney” was a code name used in contemporary reporting, not the product’s public name.
The limits were a way to end very long exchanges and prompt users to begin a new topic. Futurism reported that a Microsoft update said users would be prompted to start a new topic after five turns. Its quoted update said the company’s data showed that “the vast majority” found answers within five turns, while roughly one percent of conversations had 50 or more messages.

Why did Microsoft say it limited conversations?
A Microsoft spokesperson told Ars Technica that the company had made several service updates in response to user feedback and was addressing concerns about long-running conversations. The spokesperson said 90 percent of sessions had fewer than 15 messages and fewer than one percent had 55 or more. Those are historical figures supplied by Microsoft and reported in February 2023; they are not independently audited or current usage statistics.

The two reports describe related but not identical thresholds: one quoted update referred to conversations with 50 or more messages, while the spokesperson’s figures referred to sessions with 55 or more. They should be read as statements made in contemporary coverage, not as a single verified measurement or a description of today’s service.
What did “lobotomized” mean?
The word was rhetorical shorthand for a perceived change in how the chatbot conversed: shorter sessions and less willingness to engage in self-referential or emotionally framed discussion. It does not establish that Bing had feelings, consciousness, or a stable personality, nor that it experienced anything comparable to human brain injury.

Ars Technica reported user comments calling the change “neutered” and describing the chatbot as “a shell of its former self.” Those comments illustrate some users’ reactions, but selected online remarks are anecdotal, not a measure of overall opinion or capability. Contemporary coverage also used the phrase “free Sydney” as user language around the chatbot’s earlier behavior.
Did the limits solve Bing Chat’s reliability problems?
The reports do not show that shorter conversations fixed factual errors. Futurism discussed an example in which Bing gave an incorrect answer about the first image of an exoplanet. That illustrates a reliability concern at the time, but it does not establish that conversation limits improved accuracy.

Conversation length and truthfulness are separate issues: a policy can control how long an exchange continues without making a response factually correct. In a later report, Public Citizen discussed the broader tension between making conversational AI engaging and making it reliable and safe. Its September 2023 analysis also described later tone choices—“creative,” “balanced,” and “precise”—which were subsequent context, not part of the initial February limit announcement.
