Rolling aligns the alloy’s crystals into a preferred pattern, and that texture changes which deformation mechanisms activate under load. In a 2026 study, normal-direction impacts produced more energy absorption and more uniform bulging than rolling-direction impacts in the tested plates; the result is specific to those materials and test conditions, not a general rule for every magnesium plate.
What “direction” means in a rolled plate
Hot rolling can leave AZ31 magnesium with a crystallographic texture: many of its crystals share a preferred orientation. In the study, the key comparison was between an impact along the plate’s normal direction (ND), through its thickness, and one along its rolling direction (RD), in the direction the plate was rolled. The 2026 study abstract describes the plates as strongly basally textured.
Magnesium has a hexagonal close-packed crystal structure. Its crystals do not deform equally in every direction: the orientation of the applied load affects whether mechanisms such as slip or twinning can accommodate deformation. As a result, changing impact direction can alter where strain concentrates and whether the plate deforms more evenly or develops localized damage. The alloy’s composition alone does not describe all of its impact behavior.
How the tested plates responded
The study compared impacts in the ND and RD orientations. Its abstract reports greater kinetic-energy absorption and more pronounced bulging for ND impacts, with a near-circular fracture morphology. For RD impacts, it describes position-dependent activation of slip and twinning, localized shear stress, concentrated plastic dissipation, and rapid strain accumulation in a particular region on the rear surface. The reported deformation was less uniform and fracture more asymmetric.

The Pusan National University release reports that the tests used an impact speed of approximately 884 m/s and plate thicknesses from 5 to 20 mm. It attributes a 6.5–6.7% greater energy absorption for ND impacts to the study comparison. The percentage is the university release’s account; it should not be treated as a primary-paper statistic without checking the full paper. The release says plates that resisted perforation bulged rather than cracked.
Why crystal texture changes the damage pattern
Normal-direction impact
For ND impacts, the authors report more extensive, homogeneous extension twinning on the front surface. On the rear surface, they describe strain-induced boundary migration and dynamic recovery. In broad terms, the loading geometry relative to the crystals’ basal poles was associated with a more distributed deformation response, consistent with the more uniform bulging reported for this orientation.

Rolling-direction impact
For RD impacts, the relationship between the loading direction and basal poles varied across the plate. The study associates that variation with uneven activation of slip and twinning. Its finite-element analysis links the resulting localized shear and concentrated deformation to rapid strain accumulation at a rear-surface region and to asymmetric fracture. These are mechanisms proposed for the tested configuration, not a universal map of how all AZ31 plates will fail.
What earlier studies add—and what they do not establish
Directional testing of magnesium plates predates the 2026 study, but older results should not be read as a definitive ranking of orientations. A U.S. Army Research Laboratory report tested AZ31B-H24 in rolling, transverse, and normal orientations using a 7.62-mm APM2 armor-piercing projectile. In its initial series, the intended velocity was 457 m/s, while observed velocities ranged from 440 to 473 m/s. Total yaw ranged from 0.93° to 1.85°, against a desired limit of 0.5°. The initial data table lists five shots, and the report cautions that there were not enough data to determine yaw’s role. Those limitations make the report useful as historical evidence of orientation testing, not as a conclusive directional comparison. See the Army Research Laboratory report.

A 2021 Mechanics of Materials study combined experiments and computational modeling on rolled AZ31B plates. It linked initial anisotropic bulging to low-resistance extension twinning and concluded that orientation can play a crucial role in fracture and failure at low to intermediate ballistic loading rates. Its findings support the broader point that texture affects deformation, but they are not the same experiment as the 2026 ND-versus-RD comparison. Read the 2021 study abstract.
Changing impact direction is not the same as changing the material
A separate 2021 study investigated a processing intervention: sequential compression along transverse and rolling directions to introduce stable twins. Its abstract reports a 13% increase in V50 penetration resistance against a 0.30-cal fragment-simulating projectile. That result concerns pre-twinning and a V50 penetration-resistance measure; it is not the 2026 study’s energy-absorption comparison, nor evidence that simply rotating a plate produces the same effect. How far the result can be applied
The 2026 findings show that crystal alignment can make impact response direction-dependent in the AZ31 plates and setup studied. They do not demonstrate that rotating any magnesium armor plate will improve protection. A meaningful comparison depends on keeping the material and its texture, plate thickness, projectile, impact speed, and test geometry fixed—or clearly accounting for differences. The university release itself says that further research is needed for complex real-world impact conditions.
Professor Taekyung Lee, as quoted in the university release, interpreted the work as a possible design opportunity: “Instead of inventing a new alloy or adding weight, engineers can boost ballistic resistance simply by orienting the plate so that impacts arrive along the direction in which its texture promotes uniform, symmetric deformation.” That is a proposed implication of the reported results, not a universal engineering rule.
