Long screenshots usually fail because the capture method cannot follow or stitch the page cleanly—not necessarily because the screenshot app is broken. The right fix depends on whether you are capturing a webpage, a desktop application, or a phone screen. Start by simplifying the capture area and scroll, then try a different capture method if the content itself is difficult to stitch.
Why long screenshots fail
A scrolling screenshot must capture more than one screenful and combine the views into a single image. Depending on the device and tool, it may scroll the page and stitch successive frames, or capture a webpage using a browser’s full-page feature. Either approach can be disrupted by the target app, page behavior, capture boundaries, or software settings.
TechSmith’s Snagit support documentation calls one macOS error “Scrolling Capture Failed.” Its troubleshooting guidance identifies possible causes including unsupported applications or browsers, third-party utilities, security software, selection choices, and scrolling behavior. That is a product-specific error and list of causes, not a universal diagnosis for every screenshot tool.
Common reasons
- The capture area is hard to follow. A scrollbar, large blank margins, or irrelevant page elements can make it harder for a scrolling tool to detect and join successive views.
- The page or app changes as it moves. Floating windows, content that refreshes dynamically, and long stretches of similar-looking content can interfere with mobile stitching. Parallax effects can also make some desktop capture workflows difficult.
- Scrolling is irregular. Changing direction, moving too quickly, or zigzagging can leave gaps or duplicated areas.
- Other software gets in the way. Browser extensions, third-party utilities, security software, and unsupported apps or browsers may affect desktop capture.
- The chosen feature has limits. A phone’s scroll capture, a desktop scrolling tool, and a browser’s full-page screenshot are different workflows. Support and limits vary by product, device, market, and version.

- Enlarge the target window. Maximize the browser or application where practical so the content is easier to capture.
- Refine the selection. Keep the scrollbar outside the selected area and exclude unnecessary blank margins or ads. Turn off floating toolbars that overlap the page.
- Use the application’s default zoom. Return browser or app zoom to 100% before capturing. Non-default zoom can alter how successive views line up.
- Scroll in one direction at a steady pace. Avoid zigzagging or reversing direction during capture. If the tool asks you to scroll manually, use smooth, consistent movements.
- Try the same capture again. A cleaner selection and steadier scroll can resolve a stitching problem without changing the target content.
If it still fails on a website
- Try another browser. TechSmith notes that results can vary with page content.
- Try a private or incognito window. These windows usually disable third-party extensions, though browser settings can differ.
- Switch capture mode if the tool offers another supported option. TechSmith suggests panoramic capture when automatic scrolling fails, but warns that parallax pages may still be difficult.
- Consider whether a third-party utility, security product, or hardware driver is interfering. If you test security software, follow its vendor’s instructions and restore normal protection afterward.
Snagit on macOS: product-specific cases
TechSmith documents additional Snagit cases on macOS: the Mac App Store edition may not show scrolling arrows; a Chrome change may require enabling “Allow JavaScript from Apple Events” for the documented workflow; and in Mail, scrolling arrows may disappear when the pointer moves from the message header into the message body. These details apply to the named products and workflow. Check TechSmith’s current instructions for your Snagit and macOS versions before changing settings.
Fix a long screenshot on a phone
First check whether your particular phone supports native scroll capture and whether the app you are capturing works with it. Built-in phone features are not available in every app or on every model, and names and steps may change with software updates.

Xiaomi
Xiaomi’s documented workflow is to take a screenshot, tap Scroll, set the endpoint, and save. Xiaomi notes that Gallery Editor permissions may be required to view and save the result. The exact controls depend on the device’s software.
Samsung Galaxy
Samsung documents a built-in Scroll Capture feature on supported Galaxy phones. Check the instructions for your model and software version; availability should not be assumed across every Galaxy device.

HONOR
HONOR says its Scrollshot stops at an approximate height of 14,000 pixels. HONOR also identifies floating windows, dynamic content refreshes, and extensive similar content as possible reasons stitching may be interrupted. That approximate limit is specific to HONOR’s documentation; it is not a general maximum for phones or screenshot tools.
Tell a normal stop from a failure
If the result ends early, check whether the page simply reached its bottom, the phone reached a device-specific maximum, or the content could not be stitched reliably. Try dismissing floating windows, capture after dynamic content has settled, and use a different method if the app keeps changing as you scroll.

When the target is a webpage, use a browser’s full-page capture
A browser feature designed to capture a full webpage may be a better fit than stitching successive screen views. Microsoft says Edge’s Screenshot tool can capture a full webpage, but cautions that availability and functionality may vary by device, market, and browser version. This is a webpage workflow; it does not mean Edge can capture every scrollable desktop app window.
Choose the method that matches the target: a phone’s native scroll capture for a supported phone app, desktop scrolling capture for a supported application, or a browser full-page feature for a webpage. If the content is dynamic, floating, repetitive, or parallax-heavy, changing capture method may help more than repeating the same attempt.

Keep captures reliable and avoid wasted retries
- Match the tool to the target. A webpage capture feature is not necessarily a universal capture method for other applications.
- Stabilize the page first. Wait for dynamic content to settle and close overlays that obscure the area being captured.
- Use one controlled attempt before troubleshooting software. Correct the selection, zoom, and scroll pattern first; then isolate extensions or other utilities.
- Be careful with security testing. Do not leave protection disabled after a test. Restore it and follow the security vendor’s advice.
- Check current support details. Phone features, desktop app behavior, browser menus, and availability can change across versions and markets.
No single fix applies to every long screenshot. The most dependable troubleshooting path is to identify what you are capturing, simplify the selection and motion, and move to a capture method designed for that target when stitching remains unreliable.
