Start by matching what you see in LangSmith to the symptom below, then check the corresponding runtime and destination.
Identify what “missing” means

Check tracing settings in the process that runs the graph
LangSmith’s Python SDK README documents LANGSMITH_TRACING=true to enable tracing, an API key for authentication, and an optional endpoint setting. It also documents LANGSMITH_PROJECT as optional: when it is unset, runs go to the default project. See the LangSmith SDK README and the LangChain tracing integration guide for the configuration details.
Check that the process invoking the graph can access a usable API key without printing or exposing its value. If you use a non-default LangSmith region or a self-hosted installation, compare the application’s endpoint with the endpoint for that account or installation. The SDK README illustrates hosted US and EU endpoints, but those examples are not a complete endpoint list for every deployment type.
Verify the environment at the actual runtime boundary
A setting in your terminal or host process does not prove that a container, serverless worker, subprocess, or sandbox received it. Inspect the environment from the worker or command that actually executes the graph. LangChain’s sandbox tracing guidance passes tracing variables to sandbox.run() and flushes events before the program exits.

For a sandbox, container, or subprocess, pass the tracing configuration through that environment explicitly, then verify it there. Avoid logging secret values; confirming that a key is present is sufficient for this check.
Resolve traces marked incomplete
LangChain Support defines an incomplete LangSmith trace as one whose end event was not successfully received by the server. Its article lists early process termination, missing completion signals, missing step end times, and network problems as possible causes. - Make sure the process remains alive long enough for tracer submissions to finish.
- Check that runs send completion signals and that each step records an end time.
- Investigate network interruptions between the graph process and LangSmith.
- Use an up-to-date LangSmith SDK and wait for pending traces before program exit.
The support article recommends calling wait_for_all_tracers() before exit. For sandbox code, LangChain’s sandbox guidance demonstrates langsmith.Client().flush(). These are remedies shown in their respective guidance; do not assume the calls are interchangeable across SDKs or versions.
Look in the right project or evaluation view
LangSmith groups runs into projects. If LANGSMITH_PROJECT is not set, the Python SDK README says the default project is used. Confirm the account or workspace you opened, the project configured for the running process, and whether the run may have been sent to the default project instead. The SDK README describes project grouping and the default behavior.

Runs produced by evaluate() or aevaluate() may not appear in the development project’s ordinary run list. LangChain Support says evaluation traces are attached to examples in the evaluation dataset under Linked Traces. Open the relevant dataset and inspect those linked traces; see the support guidance for where to find traces from evaluations and how to view them.
Join RemoteGraph client and server traces
RemoteGraph crosses a distributed execution boundary, so client and server runs can appear as separate rows when distributed tracing context is not propagated. LangChain Support’s RemoteGraph guidance calls for enabling distributed_tracing=True on the client RemoteGraph and using tracing_context(parent=...) on the server. When passing metadata, extract the parent trace and project from configurable context as described there.

The support article, dated December 18, 2025, specifies langsmith >= 0.4.56 for its instructions. Treat that as the version condition in that dated guidance, not a timeless requirement; check the article and your installed SDK before applying version-specific settings. See RemoteGraph traces appear separately.
Check Agent Server deployment mode
Agent Server’s tracing behavior depends on deployment mode, so its defaults should not be assumed to match a local SDK run. LangChain’s data-plane tracing documentation describes these options:

Identify the deployment mode and check its tracing destination and settings before changing local environment variables. The options above describe the documented Agent Server modes; they do not establish every possible configuration for other tracing integrations.
