Keeping your current iPhone avoids paying for a replacement, but it does not put $1,200 in your pocket. Apple’s U.S. iPhone page advertises “up to $1,200” in credit after trade-in; that is a conditional maximum toward a purchase, not a guaranteed value for every old iPhone or a cash saving for someone who keeps it.
What Apple’s “up to $1,200” offer means
Apple’s current U.S. iPhone page lists iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 and advertises up to $1,200 in credit after trade-in. The phrase “up to” matters: Apple’s Trade In page says an estimate depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition, and Apple may revise it after inspecting the phone. The $1,200 headline is therefore not a quote for your device.
Apple’s other current store pages show why you should check the offer attached to the exact phone and purchase. Its iPhone 17 shopping page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists the phone from $899 and says “Get $35–$885 credit towards your new iPhone.” These advertised amounts appear in different store contexts and do not establish what any particular customer will receive. Keeping a phone is not the same as earning a trade-in credit
A trade-in credit reduces the cost of a new purchase; it is not money available to someone who does not buy a replacement. To compare the choices, look at the amount you would actually pay to upgrade after Apple confirms your trade-in estimate, then weigh that cost against the camera feature and the continued usefulness of your current phone.

- Trade it in: You may reduce the new phone’s cost by the estimate Apple gives for your model and condition, subject to inspection.
For online trade-ins, Apple says it must receive your old device within 14 days after delivery of the new phone for the estimate to remain valid. Apple says online processing generally takes 2 to 3 weeks. Depending on how you pay, the estimated value is applied to the new purchase or payment method; for monthly-payment purchases, Apple applies it to the purchase price after receiving and verifying the old device. “The latest photo trick” could mean different things, and the title alone does not identify one. Apple’s current iPhone 17 listing describes a 48MP Dual Fusion camera system, macro photography, next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control, and an 18MP Center Stage front camera. Whether an upgrade is worthwhile depends on your current iPhone and the particular capability you want. Don’t assume every older model lacks a feature, or treat a higher megapixel count as proof that the camera will make better photos for your needs. Check the specific feature against the specification for your current model and the model you are considering. If you share your iPhone model and the feature you have in mind, those details are necessary to make a meaningful comparison.
A practical way to decide
- Identify the feature. Name the specific photo result or camera function you want, rather than comparing phones by a vague “latest trick” label.
- Check model compatibility. Compare that feature with the camera specifications for your current iPhone and the candidate upgrade; the available information here does not establish compatibility for every older model.
- Get your actual trade-in estimate. Use Apple’s estimate for your device, model, manufacturer, and condition, and treat it as provisional until inspection.
- Compare what you would pay. Work from the current new-phone price minus the confirmed credit, not the maximum advertised amount. Include the value of keeping a still-useful phone in your decision.
- Decide whether you will use the feature enough. An upgrade makes more sense when the specific capability matters to you and justifies the actual out-of-pocket cost.
