The estimates should not be treated as interchangeable. The ₹12.7 lakh crore calculation is particularly sensitive to its chosen earnings multiple. Moneycontrol also says using the simple average of two listed-peer P/E multiples would imply about ₹7 lakh crore, while cautioning that Vodafone Idea’s stressed balance sheet makes it a difficult comparator. Why investors may argue Jio deserves a premium
A larger customer base and heavier data use
The Economic Times reports that at FY26 end Jio had 524.4 million customers, compared with 482.4 million for Bharti’s Indian business. Jio’s reported data traffic was 241.4 billion GB, versus Bharti’s 101.3 billion GB. Growth levers beyond adding subscribers
Elara’s reported investment thesis includes tariff increases, customer premiumization, enterprise services and home broadband. The logic is that higher usage and a broader range of services could lift revenue and earnings even if subscriber additions slow. What limits the bullish case?
Airtel earns more per user
Despite Jio’s larger customer base, The Economic Times reports FY26 monthly ARPU of ₹214 for Jio and ₹257 for Bharti. ARPU is average revenue per user: a higher figure can indicate stronger monetization per customer, even when a rival has fewer customers. Centrum Broking analyst Piyush Pandey told The Indian Express that the relevant measure is the product of ARPU and revenue, and said Jio was leading on that combined measure. FY26 profit and revenue favor Airtel in the reported comparison
The Indian Express reports Jio’s FY26 consolidated profit after tax at ₹30,053 crore on revenue of ₹1.47 lakh crore. Bharti Airtel’s reported consolidated profit was ₹33,823 crore on revenue of ₹2.11 lakh crore. Business scope and valuation depend on the story investors buy
Moneycontrol notes that valuation partly depends on whether investors view Jio mainly as a telecom operator or as a broader technology platform. A platform narrative may support expectations of future digital-services growth, but it does not itself establish additional earnings.
