India is on YouTube’s list of locations where eligible creators can offer channel memberships, so a missing Join button does not by itself mean memberships are unavailable in India. The cause may be the channel’s eligibility or settings, the viewer’s eligibility or location, or the device and page being used.
If you own the channel, check eligibility and setup
Look for the Memberships tab in YouTube Studio
- On a computer, open YouTube Studio and select Earn > Memberships.
- If the Memberships tab is absent, YouTube says the channel is not currently eligible for the feature. Check the channel’s eligibility and policy status rather than assuming the issue is India.
- If the channel is eligible, finish the setup steps shown in Studio and accept the Commerce Product Module when prompted.
YouTube’s channel-membership requirements include meeting the minimum requirements for fan-funding features, being in an available location, and complying with the relevant terms. India is listed as an available location for eligible creators; location alone does not qualify every channel.
Review content and channel settings
- A channel set as Made for Kids is ineligible. A significant number of Made for Kids or other ineligible videos can also affect eligibility.
- YouTube identifies videos with music claims among content that may be ineligible, and notes that some music channels may be excluded. A music claim or music-focused channel can therefore matter even when the creator is in India.
- Confirm that memberships have actually been turned on. An eligible channel may still lack a visible Join button if the feature has not been enabled.
Allow for the post-approval review
If the channel has just been accepted into the YouTube Partner Programme, membership activation may not be immediate. YouTube says it reviews the channel against membership eligibility criteria after acceptance; that process can take up to two days.
If you are a viewer, test the page and device
- Open the creator’s channel homepage. The Join button may not appear on every video watch page. YouTube gives videos claimed by certain music partners as an example of watch pages where it may be unavailable.
- Try the direct membership page. Add
/jointo the end of the creator’s channel URL. You can also look for Join on the channel homepage. These are alternatives to try, not guarantees that the channel or viewer is eligible. - Try YouTube on a computer. Button availability can differ by platform, and YouTube recommends using a computer as an alternative when joining is unavailable in an app or on a particular watch page.
- Check viewer eligibility. The viewer must be at least 18 and signed in to a Google Account to purchase a membership. The viewer’s location also matters: a creator’s eligibility in India does not establish that every viewer, account, or platform can access the feature.
Fix the “We couldn’t verify your country” message
This error concerns YouTube’s ability to verify the viewer’s country; it is separate from whether the creator is eligible for memberships. If it appears, try another network or device, or use the YouTube mobile app. If a VPN or proxy is active, YouTube advises consulting that service’s instructions for turning it off. These steps may help with country verification, but they do not override membership eligibility requirements.

Use the symptom to narrow down the cause

What will not establish or fix membership eligibility
Buying a phone, computer, or other accessory is not a documented fix for a missing Join button. The checks that matter are the creator’s Studio eligibility and setup, the viewer’s account and location, and the page or platform used to access the feature. If the issue remains, note whether you are the creator or viewer, which device and app or page you tried, the Studio membership status if available, and any exact error message before contacting YouTube or the channel owner.
