Texas is becoming a major U.S. economic center because several forces reinforce one another: population growth, a large and varied industrial base, energy production, export trade, transportation links and business-location advantages promoted by the state. No single factor explains the rise, and the available figures do not isolate how much growth any one policy or industry caused.

How large is the Texas economy?

Texas has substantial economic scale, but the answer depends on the measure and year. The Texas Comptroller reported that Texas produced $2.4 trillion in gross domestic product in 2022, equal to 9.3% of U.S. GDP. These are historical current-dollar figures, not an inflation-adjusted growth rate. For state-to-state comparisons, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) provides state GDP estimates and describes GDP by state as a comprehensive measure of the value of goods and services produced in each state. Its estimates can be revised, so comparisons should use the same release and period. See the BEA’s GDP by state data.

Growth rates answer a different question from economic size. The Comptroller’s 2025 financial report calculated that Texas real gross state product grew at an average annual rate of 3.1% over the preceding ten years, compared with 2.3% for the United States. The same report estimated 2025 growth at 2.2% for Texas and 1.4% nationally; those are report estimates, not final measured results.

What industries drive the economy?

Texas combines a highly prominent energy and mining sector with manufacturing, trade, transportation, services and other activities. The Comptroller’s 2024 statewide report puts mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction at $235.6 billion in 2022—9.8% of Texas GDP and 51.5% of U.S. output in that industry. Those are 2022 values, not current-year estimates.

The same report identifies substantial activity in nondurable-goods manufacturing, wholesale trade, and transportation and warehousing. Energy is therefore a distinctive pillar, not a complete explanation of the state economy: multiple industries contribute to production and connect Texas businesses with domestic and international markets. The Comptroller’s reports also divide the state into 12 economic regions, underscoring that its economic activity is not confined to one metro area.

How does population growth contribute?

A larger population can expand the pool of potential workers and consumers, while increasing demand for housing and services. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated Texas’s population at 31,709,821 on July 1, 2025. The Comptroller’s 2025 financial report points to net migration and a relatively high birth rate as factors underlying its population outlook. These conditions help explain the potential for a growing workforce and market, but they do not quantify population’s separate contribution to output growth.

Why do exports and transportation matter?

Exports connect Texas energy and manufacturing production to buyers beyond the state. The Comptroller’s 2025 Cash Report says Texas accounted for 22.0% of U.S. exports in 2024. The value is not a straight upward trend: exports fell 8.4% in 2023, rose 2.3% in 2024, and were down 0.6% through July 2025 compared with the same period a year earlier. The Comptroller attributed much of the 2023 decline to lower oil and natural gas prices.

Trade activity is spread across several metropolitan areas. The U.S. Trade Representative lists 2024 goods exports of $181 billion for Houston–Pasadena–The Woodlands, $75.6 billion for Corpus Christi, $51 billion for Dallas–Fort Worth, $41.3 billion for El Paso, and $29.4 billion for Beaumont–Port Arthur. These are metro-area figures, not statewide totals, and should not be added to statewide export figures or compared across different years as if they measured the same thing. The Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office also cites the state’s central location, transportation access and infrastructure as business advantages.

What business-location advantages does Texas cite?

The Texas Economic Development and Tourism Office presents the absence of personal and corporate income taxes, a skilled and diverse workforce, central location, transportation access and infrastructure as advantages for businesses. These are the state’s stated reasons to locate or expand there, not independent proof that any one advantage caused the state’s economic growth. The figures on output, population, industry and exports establish context, but the available sources do not isolate the contribution of taxes, incentives or individual company relocations.

How should Texas’s economic strength be judged?

One statistic cannot establish that growth is broad-based or durable. For a fair comparison with another state, use the same period and measure: real output growth for inflation-adjusted production, population for market and workforce scale, employment and wages for labor-market conditions, and exports and industry mix for trade exposure and concentration. Keep estimates distinct from historical observations, and do not treat current-dollar GDP as real growth.

Texas’s economic rise is best understood as the interaction of scale, population, an energy-heavy but diversified industrial base, trade and infrastructure, alongside business-climate advantages the state promotes. The data support that combined explanation; they do not assign a precise share of growth to any single cause.
