Start with alerts in the Starlink app, then check whether the issue affects one device or every device. That distinction helps you focus on the likely source instead of replacing equipment unnecessarily.
Start with Starlink app alerts
Open the Starlink app and check for outage, obstruction, or hardware alerts. Use its obstruction tool to see whether trees, buildings, poles, debris, or other obstacles are blocking the dish’s view. Foliage can grow, debris can accumulate, and a dish can shift, so a previously clear location may no longer be clear. Starlink’s obstruction guidance explains how to check and address a blocked view.
Find out whether one device or the whole connection is slow
If only one device is affected
Move it closer to the router and retest. Check which Wi-Fi band it uses: Starlink says 2.4 GHz reaches farther, while 5 GHz is faster but works best close to the router. Temporarily turn off a VPN and compare results. A slow result on one device, especially when other devices work normally, points toward that device, its Wi-Fi connection, or its VPN rather than necessarily indicating a dish or satellite-link problem. See Starlink’s slow-speed troubleshooting.
If several devices are affected
Continue with the router, dish view, weather, cables, external network equipment, and time-of-day checks below. If available, use the Starlink app’s Advanced Speed Test to compare router-to-internet, device-to-router, and device-to-internet performance. A low device-to-router result suggests a local Wi-Fi bottleneck; test close to the router and on 5 GHz before concluding that the Starlink connection itself is slow.

- 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
- 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
- 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
- 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
- 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.
Check cables and isolate third-party networking equipment
Inspect accessible connections for looseness, visible damage, kinks, or exposure to weather. If you use a third-party router, mesh node, or switch, temporarily remove it from the setup and retest with Starlink’s supplied equipment. If performance improves, reconnect external equipment one item at a time to narrow down what is affecting the connection. Starlink’s third-party router guidance addresses this troubleshooting path.
For the Ethernet connection between the Starlink router and other network equipment described on Starlink’s help page, the company recommends Cat5e or higher; lower-rated Ethernet may limit speeds. That guidance is about this Ethernet connection, not a generic replacement for the kit-specific cable that connects the dish.

Check the dish location and weather
Address an obstruction safely
If the app’s scan shows a blocked view, clear the obstruction where practical or consider relocating or raising the dish with a suitable mount or pole. Choose a safe location with a clear view, and do not climb onto a roof or tower or work in trees if it is unsafe; get professional help where needed. Starlink’s obstruction instructions cover ways to improve the dish’s view.
Allow for weather-related interruptions
Starlink says significant weather can degrade service by attenuating radio signals. Moderate to heavy rain, snow, or hail can cause momentary dropouts, and some degradation should resolve after the weather passes. After a storm, check accessible hardware and connections for damage. See Starlink’s weather guidance.

Compare performance at different times
Keep the same device, location, Wi-Fi band, and test method while comparing results at busy and quieter times. If performance worsens at peak times but improves off-peak, congestion may be contributing; Starlink notes that performance can decrease during peak network periods. One Starlink article describes peak hours as typically 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. local time, but that is guidance from that article, not a universal schedule. Speeds also vary by location and plan, so compare results with the expectations shown for your service area rather than treating one speed as a universal Starlink benchmark. See the slow-speed guidance and third-party router article.

If the problem persists, keep a brief record of when it happens and what you observed. Include dates and times, weather, affected devices, app alerts, and test results. Starlink’s troubleshooting checklist recommends a Cloudflare speed test, checking whether a VPN is active when the detected network is not SpaceX, using traceroute to examine latency, and running 200-packet ping tests for packet loss. Submit the record and results through Starlink Support, along with details of the checks you have already tried. Starlink also provides steps for intermittent internet troubleshooting.
