A black screen alone doesn’t reveal whether your sleep-sounds stream stopped sending video or whether playback failed on a particular device. First check the stream’s preview and status in YouTube Live Control Room, then compare the public stream on another device. If the preview is black or the stream is inactive, investigate the encoder and its video feed; if the preview looks right and only one device is black, investigate that device’s playback.
Start by checking whether the outgoing video is black
- Open the stream’s Live Control Room preview. YouTube recommends checking the preview before starting an encoder broadcast and monitoring audio and video during the stream. If the preview is black, the problem is likely in the outgoing feed rather than just one viewer’s playback.
- Check whether YouTube is receiving data. If you use the Live Streaming API, its
status.streamStatusvalue ofactivemeans YouTube’s servers are receiving data from the encoder. That confirms data is arriving; it does not by itself confirm that the picture is correct. Google for Developers: Life of a Broadcast. - Compare playback on another device. If the creator preview looks normal, open the public stream on a second device. A normal preview paired with a black picture on just one device points toward that playback path, but the comparison is a diagnostic clue, not a definitive diagnosis.
- If the preview is black or the stream is inactive, inspect the encoder. Confirm that the intended video source or scene is present and that the encoder is still sending to the right stream. YouTube’s stream key and server URL are the connection details the encoder uses to send the feed. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.
If audio continued but the picture is black
Use the preview to establish whether the black picture is present in the feed YouTube receives. If it is, check the encoder’s selected video source or scene and whether that source is still producing the intended image. If the preview is good, compare the public stream on another device before changing the encoder configuration. The available platform guidance does not identify a specific cause for this stream or establish whether audio continued overnight.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends testing encoder streams and checking their accessibility and local archive while they run. Before relying on a sleep-sounds stream overnight:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Run an unlisted or public test stream and inspect the Live Control Room preview.
- Check that the event can be opened from your channel and watch pages, including on a mobile device.
- Monitor audio and video quality, and verify that any local archive file is growing during the broadcast.
These checks can reveal a bad outgoing feed or an access problem before you leave the setup. They cannot establish what happened during a past overnight stream if its preview, status, and archive are no longer available. YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips.

What Auto-start, Auto-stop, and a stream key can—and can’t—do
Auto-start and Auto-stop
YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings let you start or stop streaming from the encoder. The API documentation says that, when Auto-stop is enabled, YouTube ends a broadcast about a minute after the encoder stops transmitting video. That is broadcast lifecycle behavior; it is not documented as a way to repair a black picture while video transmission continues. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings; Google for Developers: Life of a Broadcast.
Stream key
A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. YouTube documents resetting a key as a response to a compromised key, not as a routine fix for a black-screen symptom. Don’t reset it just because the picture is black; first check the preview, stream status, and encoder feed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded sleep-sounds videos running on YouTube without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. This is an alternative way to run uploaded video, not a diagnosis or guaranteed fix for a black-screen problem. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
