First identify whether the whole stream reaches viewers late or whether the sound and picture are misaligned. These are different problems: YouTube’s latency setting affects how quickly viewers receive the stream, while source timing in streaming software such as OBS can affect audio/video synchronization. Neither symptom alone identifies the cause of your particular setup.
Tell whole-stream delay from an audio/video sync problem
Ask two questions: Are the audio and video synchronized with each other but both arrive late, or does one lead the other? And where do you see the problem—in the OBS preview, in a remote viewer’s playback, or in a saved recording?
- Both sound and picture arrive late together: this is whole-stream latency, the time between capture and playback for viewers.
- Sound leads or trails the picture: this is an audio/video sync mismatch. Changing YouTube’s latency option is not the same as correcting timing between sources.
Check playback from another device or ask a remote viewer to verify what is reaching the audience. Preview lag does not, by itself, prove that viewers receive a mismatched stream. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s encoder guidance

If the whole stream arrives late
YouTube describes stream latency as the time from camera capture until the event is displayed to viewers. A main source of latency is the player’s read-ahead buffer. YouTube puts the trade-off plainly: “The lower the latency, the less read-ahead buffer the video player will have.” Less buffer can mean faster delivery, but playback is more likely to buffer, especially when network conditions are unstable. Choose latency based on interaction needs
| YouTube option | Best fit | Trade-off or constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive streams | YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option with the lowest viewer buffering. |
| Low latency | Streams with limited audience interaction | Less read-ahead buffer can increase buffering risk. YouTube says Low latency does not support 4K. |
| Ultra-low latency | Real-time conversation and engagement | Buffering risk increases. YouTube says Ultra-low latency does not support 4K. |
For an ASMR stream, choose according to whether live chat needs to feel immediate and whether 4K matters. Do not select Ultra-low latency automatically just because the stream is live. YouTube says webcam and mobile streams are always set up for interactivity and do not offer a selectable latency setting; the available choice depends on the streaming workflow. YouTube’s latency guidance
If audio and video are out of sync
First establish which element is early. Test a clear sound that coincides with a visible action, then check the actual stream or representative playback from a viewer-side device. Make a timing adjustment only after confirming the mismatch there; a control in OBS can help, but its existence does not prove OBS is the cause.

Use OBS Render Delay only when the picture needs delaying
OBS documents a Render Delay filter that delays rendering of a source image. One stated use is syncing a webcam image to microphone audio. If the webcam picture arrives before the corresponding sound, this may be a relevant control to investigate. If the audio is early instead, delaying the image would move things in the wrong direction. The documentation describes the control, not a diagnosis or a universal offset value. Check for duplicate microphone capture
OBS can capture a microphone as a scene audio input. Its documentation warns that selecting the same device both globally and again as a scene source can cause echo. Check the audio setup for duplicate capture if you hear echo or unexpected audio behavior. OBS Audio Sources

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Check for stutter, dropped frames, or a worsening problem
If the mismatch grows over time, or occurs alongside stuttering, dropped frames, or stream-health warnings, examine the connection and encoder path as well. OBS says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections point to a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server—for example, an unstable connection or one unable to keep up with the selected bitrate. Lowering video bitrate is one troubleshooting action in OBS’s guidance. These signs make network checks worthwhile, but they do not by themselves establish the cause of an audio/video sync mismatch. OBS connection troubleshooting
- Run a test stream with representative ASMR audio and visible movement, and check playback from another device.
- Monitor YouTube stream health while testing and during the live stream.
- If YouTube or OBS reports connection trouble or dropped frames, check connection stability and whether the upload path can sustain the chosen bitrate; consider lowering the video bitrate.
- Retest after each change so you can tell whether it affected viewer latency, sync, or neither.
YouTube recommends testing ahead of time with representative audio and movement, monitoring stream health, and choosing settings that are reliable for the available upload connection. YouTube encoder guidance
